Sunday 30th of June
07.29 Good morning from room 6 at Apartmanház Orient in Eger, Hungary. We have come to the conclusion that sleep is good and was exactly what we needed. Now we have to get ready for breakfast, which is served in half an hour. Then we´ll take off in the heat towards the railway station.
08.23 With a decent breakfast consumed, we will now get ready to depart. The breakfast room was model cramped and there wasn't much space to move around when there were more guests than us arriving.
09.20 In a leafy park with birds singing, the two of us are now sitting on a bench. We are in another part of the same park (Érsekert) that we walked through yesterday.
09.36 There are people on the platform. Christer is off and trying to buy tickets that will take us on to Miskolc.
09.52 The English-speaking ticket machine exchanged VISA payment for tickets. Now we are on board for today's first, short train journey that will take us to Füzesabony.
10.33 We are at a new station, Füzesabony. Here we have boarded a new train and will soon be ready for a new journey east. Once again we are on a new modern train.
11.09 Modern trains are comfortable no matter where in the world you travel, although in a warm Hungary it is extra welcome.
11.39 Arriving at the Miskolc-Tiszai station, we have just bought tram tickets in a small building. It is too far to get to the center on foot.
12.07 My brain is tired today. Is it general health problems or the heat? At Munch Pastry & Café, open on Sundays, we have ordered coffee and sandwiches. We had hoped to get a little more to eat and drink but the supply was limited today. Outside the cafe is a statue of a dog that saved hundreds of people. Apparently Mancs, as the dog was called, found people buried in earthquakes. The poor dog died of pneumonia but is still being honoured with flowers. Mancs has also given its name to the square outside here, Mancs tér.
12.36 I am sitting on a bench among flowers and insects by the river Szinva and waiting for Christer who is off to a Tesco store and buys drinks, drinks to be consumed during the day and evening. The shops close early today as it is Sunday. Therefore, we must act now or not at all.
16.46 This was perhaps the best meals of the trip so far, although Christer thought that the Slovak dinner in Budapest could compete. The fact that we also got to cool off during the meal was another highlight. We don't have much of that out in town or in the room. Now we have slowly gone back to and even entered the hotel. Here we will prepare for football and plan the trip abroad and the stay tomorrow. Now the pen stopped working. So there, now I have changed!
21.20 Via a Spanish centre-back, the ball goes into the goal after 18 minutes. Surprisingly, it is 1-0 to Georgia.

07.44 There is a lot that is new this morning. A new week and a new month (July) has begun and later today we will also arrive in a new country on this trip. Now we have said goodbye to June. Today we will also say goodbye to Miskolc and also Hungary.
08.33 Now that we have bought today's train tickets online, it is time for breakfast and payment for it and also the stay here. The hotel, which was so empty yesterday, is this morning populated with staff. 08.40 We have sat down in the hotel's grand dining room and will now be served breakfast. We have made a selection based on a menu with various options. 09.06 After a good breakfast, we wanted to pay for it and the accommodation. It turned out that the room was already paid for. Who and when paid this? Could we have done it? Sometimes Christer gets a message on his email that a room has been paid, but when it happens for two hotels at the same time, it's easy to miss it. The young girl at breakfast who we thought was some summer worker turned out to be the one who was later responsible for all the payment. 09.53 Now that breakfast and tourist tax have been paid, we will take the tram back to the railway station Miskolc-Tiszai. At the time of payment, Christer saw forgotten items posted on a notice board, including a map of Viagra that was missing three tablets. 10.08 It went well to go to the station. Now we just have to find the right platform and track. 10.16 Important information is announced over the loudspeakers. Exact message is not easy to understand in Hungarian. However, there will be a translation in English afterwards, at least for the trains most often used by tourists. 10.40 A little late we leave Miskolc. Our coupe is in a classic cut for us. There are two three-seaters with luggage racks above, just like back in the years when we traveled around Europe in trains. Now it's off to the north on a route we've traveled a number of times over the years.

We have arrived in Košice.
Staničný Pivovar brewery/pub at the train station in Košice.
11.21 We are still in Hungary and have been joined in our compartment. A young woman has just sat down across from me. Wondering who she is and where she's going?
11.30 Our party has got up and walked out. Is she getting off or was it because of us? In any case, we are in Novajidrány. 11.57 After a longer stop in Hidasnémeti, we now roll on towards today's final station, a return. Soon we will be in Slovakia.SLOVAKIA
12.44 Arriving at the railway station in Košice, after a while of searching, we have gone up a few floors to the station's brewery and pub, Staničný Pivovar (https://stanicnypivovar.sk). Here we had some language problems but in the end ordered from today's menu and received two glasses of the brewery's own beer.
12.51 We have each received a portion of bryndzové halušky, one of Slovakia's national dishes. To this we drink very good beer, IC-ečko IPA. 13.35 With thirst and hunger quenched, we are now ready to leave the station to walk again through beautiful Košice, a city with 228,249 inhabitants that is Slovakia's second largest. 14.02 We have found Aupark, a large mall we have never been to before. If the truth be told, it was probably not built the last time we were in the city in 2008. Here we have found something familiar to us, namely a Starbucks café. We take a break here before moving on to check-in at the hotel we will be staying at. 14.47 Again we are ready to leave a Starbucks and a shopping mall to look for accommodation. Here in Slovakia, the temperature is more bearable compared to how it was in Hungary. 15.16 At Hotel Akadémia (https://adminwebu.wixsite.com/mysite), which has just been renamed from Garni Hotel Akadémia, we will spend most of the time until departure tomorrow. There is not much here that feels modern and check-in took a while. Outside, the thunder rumbles and the trams rattle by. Today's room number is 220. The hotel complex appears to be partly a cheap hotel and partly accommodation for boarding students. The price is good but the whole atmosphere reminds us of the old communist hotels we stayed in 20 years ago.

Christer walks through Košice.
We are back in Košice after an absence of about fifteen years.
16.14 To make it through the evening, we have to go out to do some grocery shopping. There must be shopping options nearby.
17.09 At Lidl on the other side of the big, wide street Južná trieda, we have bought drinks for tonight. It could have been cooler in our room. Wondering how we'll cover the football this evening? Here in Slovakia, the rights for the European football championship seem to lie with some TV channel that we don't have access to. 18.00 It will be the Swedish Radiosporten via Christer's mobile which will help us cover the next round of 16, the match between France and Belgium. 18.14 We can't say it's looking good for either team. This is mainly because we listen to the match and cannot see anything. Now France got the first corner of the match. 18.49 Zero minutes left in the first half and zero goals scored. We want an odd number of goals in the second half. Then we have enough time to eat dinner before the next match starts. 19.41 The match offers half-hearted efforts and goal chances. Shouldn't there be any goals before full time? A Belgian throw-in is thrown back and the crowd chants about 33-year-old Kevin De Bruyne. 19.44 In the 85th minute of the match, it will be a goal for the tricolor boys. France's 1-0 is judged to be an own goal by Jan Vertonghen. Now no more goals are needed. 19.54 There were no goals for Romelu Lukaku this European Championship despite all his chances and disallowed offside goals. There will be no more matches for Belgium at all. Christer and I now go back to the Aupark mall to look for dinner. 20.33 At the top of the Aupark Tower we found the Pilsner Urquell Pub (https://www.pilsnerurquellpub.sk). Here we have ordered sparrows and beer (Šariš). However, it is only sparrows in name. Moravský vrabec (Sparrow from Moravia) is a Czech dish made with pork. We have noticed a sad trend here in Slovakia. The Slovakian beers that we appreciate so much seem to be more and more crowded out by the bigger Czech beer brands, a sad development.

21.04 When the next round of 16 in the European Championship, Portugal against Slovenia, began to be shown on the restaurant's TV screens, we understood that it was time to trudge home again. The food here was heavenly good and the beer wasn't much worse.
21.34 Outside it was a light rain and almost an autumn-like atmosphere. Now we are back at home for the usual evening time, beer and Euro 2024 football. Once again, we have to make do with Radiosporten´s transmission to follow the whole thing. 22.11 In the football match between Portugal and Slovenia it is 0-0. In the evening beer match between me and Christer it is also 0-0. However, some zero will crack soon. 22.37 Two zeros are cracked. Both by a Kelt. Me and Christer have had a beer each. Cristiano Ronaldo misses an opportunity to do the same, to break the deadlock, not to have a beer. 22.56 It's a failed Portuguese corner and there will be extra time in this match. 23.14 In the final minute of the first quarter of extra time, Portugal are awarded a penalty. Kicked down or running on your feet is the question according to the radio commentators. Ronaldo kisses the ball. 23.16 The kiss didn't help. The goalkeeper steered the ball off the post. Was it perhaps that the ball was offended by the kiss and didn´t cooperate. Ronaldo cries after the miss. 23.36 It's a missed Slovenian goal opportunity. Will there be penalties? 23.33 Everything must be decided on penalties. I'll report back on how it went. 23.45 After six penalties, it's all over. Portugal wins the shootout 3-0. Portuguese goalkeeper Diogo Costa saves all three penalties from Slovenia. Now it will be balcony beer for us.
While waiting for the food, you can write in the journal.

Tuesday 2nd of July
07.47 During the night it has rained in Košice, but now the pigeons are cooing and birds of an unknown species are singing outside our hotel window. Another day of transport awaits today but we will stay in town until lunch to see what we missed yesterday. We look forward to seeing the square in the center again, a lovely place.
08.15 Something that belongs to mornings is eating breakfast. This also applies this morning. Breakfast is included in the room price here at Hotel Akadémia. 09.09 It was perhaps not the strongest of breakfasts, but it was a breakfast. There was hardly any strength in either coffee or juice. Breakfast is called raňajky in Slovak. 09.47 Christer closes the balcony door. Soon it's check-out and we're ready for a few hours in Košice. We want to get a little done before we take the train on through Slovakia. It will include return visits to various sights and hopefully we will also find a good lunch restaurant. 10.08 We have left the hotel behind and have just documented the Pamätník vojakov Sovietskej armády, a monument that pays tribute to the Soviet army that liberated Slovakia at the end of World War II. We remember photographing it already on our first visit here in 2000 but the surroundings have completely changed since then. 10.22 It is cloudy and drizzling rain. We are now in the central parts of Košice, more precisely in the Námestie slobody park by Dóm svätej Alžbety, the beautiful Elisabeth Church.
A simple breakfast at Hotel Akadémia.
We remember this Soviet monument from our first visit to Košice.
Hlavná, the square that is the heart of the city.
Rails that is no longer in use.
Košice was the first city in Europe to have its own city coat of arms in 1369.
Dóm svätej Alžbety, the Elisabeth Church.
10.40 So we finally get to see the beautiful music fountain in the center of Košice again. It is still a wonderful sight, although the experience is even better when it gets dark in the evening. Right now it is playing music from Frank Sinatra and the water is spraying in time with the music being played. The fountain is called Spievajuca fontána, the singing fountain.
11.01 We have made a stop near a statue of a seated man. The last time we were here I was sitting on a snowy chair across from him. It was on New Year's Day 2009. The man is the city's literary son Sándor Márai. He is the author of over 40 books. To my knowledge, I haven't read a single one. Maybe I should? He is considered a Hungarian writer because Košice was called Kassa and was located in Hungary when he was born in 1900. 11.07 What has been done in the past bears repeating. I have again sat opposite Sándor and a new photo has been taken. 11.25 Now we have returned to the park by the Elizabeth Church. There are a lot of people on the move in the city center. 11.39 Our lunch plans start to go awry. The nice candidates we had checked out only open at 14.00. This late we are already on the train from here. Also, we can't find any place that serves our favorite beer from the country, Zlatý Bažant. In the city, we have seen bike food delivery from Bolt. It might be just as well that we call one of these instead. 11.54 We have thought a little here and there. There may be a solution to the lunch problem.

12.20 Lunch will be a safe bet, something we know about. We make a return visit to the restaurant/pub u Kohúta (https://www.pubukohuta.sk). Here there will be an order for today's lunch offer, first there will be soup.
12.57 Yummy, how good it was. The pork dish was delicious. Master is a really good, dark Czech beer that is brewed by the same brewery as the more famous Pilsner Urquell. Now we will slowly walk towards the railway station. 13.07 We have made a stop outside a souvenir shop in the city centre. Here we take turns going in because we have our big backpacks with us. 13.33 A few small purchases were made. Goodbye for this time Košice! Will we ever see each other again? Much was new and we didn't get to drink any Zlatý Bažant. Some things were fun to see again. However, a little of the charm we remember from the past has fallen. Unfortunately, when things are modernized, some of the charm of the past disappears. It's sad when traditional Slovak beer restaurants are replaced by newer, trendier places. 14.01 We made our way back to the railway station and found our little local train. The train journey goes without a problem. We are heading north through Slovakia. 14.48 The train got off at the station Prešov Mesto and we walked the relatively short distance to our accommodation Penzión Brahama (http://www.penzionbrahama.sk). There was a short wait before the front doors slid open. We are now checked in to room 11. We have visited the city of Prešov but not stayed before. We were here on a shorter day trip in 2001 when we also had our friend Roger with us. Unfortunately, we hardly remember anything from that visit. Did we drink that many beers? 15.45 Now we are ready to make a closer study of Prešov, a city with 94,718 inhabitants just over 30 km north of Košice. What is here to see and do? Will we get any memories from that short visit 23 years ago? 16.07 We have walked along various smaller streets and finally arrived at Prešov's main square Hlavná which not only has the name in common with the one in Košice. The shape and layout is the same, a long square with churches in the middle. Here we have encountered stone versions of both Jesus and the old Pope John Paul II.

16.18 We have finally seen something we remember and recognize from the visit in 2001. It is yet another monument Pamätník osloboditeľom which pays tribute to fallen Soviet soldiers. We have photographed it and the cathedral Konkatedrála Svätého Mikuláša.
16.29 At Jimmey's Coffee & Drinks by the square, we each have a longo coffee. The location is perfect with a view towards the cathedral. 16.41 The coffee was good, the location is good and the waitress is pretty. To continue enjoying everything, we have also ordered Czech beer (Bernard) and cheese/ham sandwiches to go with it. 17.24 We have to do this again, although in that case on a different day, city and place. 17.50 On the way home we stopped at Fresh, a small grocery store. There we bought some drinks for the evening and evening. Soon it will be kick-off in today's first football match. 18.18 So far it is goalless in the match Romania against the Netherlands. Even today, we only get the football drama in audio form via Radiosporten on Swedish national radio. 18.22 Now it has become a goal. A right-footed shot against the front post gives the Netherlands the lead. Goal scorer is Cody Gakpo. 18.53 The Netherlands leads at half-time with 1-0. Former world champion in high jump, the South African Jacques Freitag has been found dead. The police suspect murder.

19.44 The match is not exactly even. Now the Netherlands also make it 2-0 through Donyell Malen. There will probably be no extra time today.
19.54 Now it's 3-0. The same man also scored the third goal. 20.26 The Netherlands won the game. We ourselves have ordered tonight's dinner in the form of pizzas from the brewery pub Prešovská piváreň. Here, it's home-made beer that counts. I'm going to try their Redhead and Christer has ordered the Fajerman. 21.04 After a long wait, a quarter of an hour after Christer got his, my pizza arrived. I guess the waiter forgot my order. It went faster in Leipzig for Turkey to score 1-0 against Austria in the evening's second Euro 2024 game. Goal scorer is Merih Demiral. 21.48 Walking home was fine. Nothing dramatic happened on our walk. In Leipzig it is 1-0 and it has started to rain. 22.19 On a corner, Turkey increases the lead to 2-0. Once again, it is defender Merih Demiral who scored. 22.26 The match is not over yet. Austria reduces to 2-1 through Michael Gregoritsch. We have also put together a plan on how to get further north to Bardejov tomorrow. 22.51 Austria has finished playing for this European Championship. Turkey won the match 2-1.

Wednesday 3rd of July
07.44 Music, ABBA and "Happy New Year" can be heard from the radio broadcast on Christer's mobile phone. However, there is still a long way to go until New Year's Day. Today we have a few hours to spend before we continue by train from Prešov.
08.36 We have eaten a good breakfast, which, however, was not so big and filling. It was served at the tables in front of the reception with Slovak morning TV as entertainment. Now we are thinking about when we go on to Bardejov. Should we eat something more before departure or after we arrive? 08.58 We have made a decision. We start by eating something lighter here in Prešov and can check in immediately after arriving in Bardejov. Just now there was a knock on our door. It was the hostess who wanted the key. 09.53 Goodbye nice comfortable rooms! The stay here was not bad at all. Now we´ll pass the time before we travel on. 10.02 We have walked from Penzión Brahama into more central parts of the city. We are now standing in front of the Floriánova brána city gate. Inside this there should be some cafés. 10.24 Now what we ordered here at Bongusto Caffè (https://www.bongustocaffe.sk) arrives. There will be little to eat (sandwiches) and drink (coffee) at nice outdoor tables. 11.17 While waiting for the train we are going to take, we take a small bench break in a park (Park Alexandra Duchnoviča) down by the Torysa river. It will only be a short stop. Soon the train will be here.

We will go by train from Prešov Mesto.
Peter has boarded the train to Bardejov.
11.30 So we are back at the Prešov Mesto station, which is not much more than a platform. A lady getting off a train asked if this was Prešov Stanica, the main station. We informed her about the name of this station and she muttered something and walked away displeased. We are waiting for our train and a first very short train journey.
11.43 The wait is over, now we roll a few minutes into Prešov's central station. 11.49 It was, as said and written, a short train journey. Now we sit and wait inside the station building. 12.07 There are more people than us who are waiting for information about which platform we should go to and leave from. A small crowd has formed under the electronic board showing it. 12.13 Information was given on a board and in the loudspeakers. We were told to go to track 2. We did and on the track was an older model train set. Now that we're on board, we're just waiting for it to start. We have vague memories of going on a similar train back in 2000. 12.32 Our journey to Bardejov has begun. The last time we went there, then on a day trip, we didn't get all the way by train. We had to switch to a bus after a while. 12.37 A seated man who I thought was a passenger suddenly became the train conductor. Now we have shown him our tickets and passports.
Christer admires Slovak countryside.
Peter has arrived at Bardejov.

We stay in the room Katka.

Penzión Bardejov is located in this house.
12.53 The journey goes through a beautiful landscape and the train often stops in small villages. So far, everyone can fit in our little train.
13.50 Once we arrived at the station in Bardejov, we first went to the 1.Day store to buy drinks and snacks. Then we continued to Penzión Bardejov (https://www.penzionbardejov.sk) where we will stay. The accommodation is in a building just outside the bus station, which in turn is connected to the railway station. In the same building as our accommodation, there are various companies, a driving school and a garden shop, among other things. From a box with spinning numbers we retrieved a key to the room named Katka. Once in that, we are currently struggling to open the window. This thing with boxes with spinning numbers is becoming more and more common on our travels. On the Easter trip, we met a few, for example. 14.34 Before further activities, we drank coffee and each ate a croissant from 7 Days. We had a few like that when we traveled in this part of Europe back in the day. We managed to get the window up after a while. 15.50 Now we are planned and prepared to look around in beautiful Bardejov, a really cozy town as we remember it from the last visit. 16.10 On our walk between the home and the center we have stopped just outside the city walls. Now we're going to get into the heart of the city. Bardejov, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is located in the Šariš region and has 29,964 inhabitants. 16.23 Right next to the large church Bazilika sv. Egídia and on the square Radničné námestie we take a bench break. It is a beautiful square with a town hall (Radnica Bardejov) in the middle. It has stood here since 1505. We want to remember that we were inside that building on the last visit, unclear why. What were we doing in there?

Bardejov has a beautiful square.
16.35 The beautiful square was worth a closer look. We have strolled around for a while, photographed and admired the beautiful buildings. Right now we are standing by the statue of an executioner with the axe in full swing. The statue is called Socha kata.
16.50 After a short walk, we are back on a bench with beautiful birdsong around us. Below us is a wall with names and dates, a howitzer/cannon and what I think is a peace monument. The monument celebrating Soviet friendship is called Pamätník vďaky a prieštstva. 17.00 Now that's enough with bird sounds and monuments. It's time to head towards today's dinner. Further away, a person walks with two poles. Music is heard further away. 17.31 It's cozy and homely at the Slovenská reštaurácia upstairs from street level. However, it is almost empty of people here. We have ordered food to eat and the Czech beer Bakalár to drink. The waiter apologized that he had no English menus and offered to help us. Then we discovered that there were English translations in the Slovak menu. 18.03 It wasn't big portions but it was really good, typical Czech/Slovakian food that we really appreciate. Now that we have paid, we must find our way home. 18.35 After some trouble we got the three doors we have to pass through to get into the room. Mainly the gate messed up. Now we have to time the walk to the supermarket Billa with the arrival of the Flixbus. We want to see where it leaves from. We need to know this because it is with that company that we are going tomorrow morning. We assume that the evening bus leaves from the same stop as the morning bus.
Bardejov is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

19.40 We didn't see the bus tonight but think we know where it stops. We bought evening drinks and breakfast at Billa. The customer after me was taking my sandwich. It was probably just a reflex but his actions made the cashier smile. Now we are at home in the Katka room for evening calm and tomorrow's plans.
20.15 We have most of our own time right now, do what we feel like doing. One thing is to use mobile phones to update us on the latest news and search for information about what lies ahead on the journey. 21.39 Now we have enjoyed evening coffee and are taking part in the evening's Swedish news via SVT Play. They have told us about Joe Biden's chances of standing in the upcoming presidential election. 22.57 During our stay in Slovakia, we have been desperately looking for the delicious beer Zlatý Bažant (Golden Pheasant) on tap. There has been none. On previous visits to Slovakia, it was everywhere. This beer has been appreciated by us during previous stays. Today we bought the beer in a bottle instead. It is not appreciated as much anymore. It doesn't taste at all like we remember it when we drank it in Slovakia or bought it at the liquor store Systembolaget back home in Sweden when it was available there. 23.38 We leave the window a little open and get ready for the last Slovak night of this trip.
