08.58 I have spent the night in the, so far, best bed of the trip. We remain where we went to bed last night, at the Astoria Residence Hotel in Parma. Now it's a few hours left until the next train trip.
09.30 It seems as if the shampoo, which Roberth bought in Florence is left in Florence. It did not want to leave its hometown. Until now he has successfully used the hotel shampoos, and, therefore, not discovered the loss. 10.23 The breakfast buffet had a tasteful and wide variety. The time has come to pack our belongings. We should perhaps do something else before we walk to the railway station. 11.14 Everything is as it should be. Now it is up to us to make sure that everything is going where it should. 11.34 Roberth paid for the stay and we´ll pay him later. Now we have placed ourselves inside of the Café House. We have ordered espresso and cappuccinos for the coffee craving intestines. We found no appropriate coffee place inside the railway station but found this which is just next door. 12.03 Christer is sitting by himself at one and Roberth and I share on another stone barrier. The sun is shining and it is good to be here. We are at platform 1 at the railway station. Within half an hour we will go on from here.
We are drinking coffee before leaving Parma. A mysterious old lady can be seen in the background.
We are waiting for the train to La Spezia.
Peter is slowly leaving Parma.
Beautiful landscapes along the border between Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna.
We are arriving at Pontremoli.
Roberth is leaving the train in La Spezia.
12.12 Now it is I who sit by myself. Opposite me and next to each other sit Roberth and Christer. We found a trinity seat in a second class wagon. Out on the platform is a man preparing his bike. He might be preparing it for the train ride.
12.30 Our journey to the sea has taken its beginning. Now we leave Parma, the station, the man and his bike. The bike and man are going somewhere else. Today's train trip goes over a part of the Apennines, the mountain range which runs along the Italian "boot". On the other side of the mountains, along the sea, is the region of Liguria. 13.02 The landscape changed to a more rural character. The flat became hillier. Recently we went through a long tunnel, 1572 metres, before we came to Solignano. 13.38 Our train has stopped in Pontremoli. We are temporarily back in the region of Tuscany. Right now we are up in the mountains. Soon, the journey continues towards the sea. 14.19 We are now in Liguria and begin to slowly approach the Mediterranean sea. We have just passed Santo Stefano di Magra. 14.40 We have finally come to the port city of La Spezia. Here, it will be a short stop before the next train ride begin. During the stop, we have hopes to get us a small snack. 15.02 It went as planned. Before the upcoming departure, we have purchased and are now consuming a sandwich and juice each. A train stands on track 5 and according to the monitors, it is the right train for us. La Spezia is called "the pirates 'city" if you believe the graffiti we saw on the way in towards the railway station.
The railway station in La Spezia.
A quarry in Carrara. From here you get nice marble.
We are going across the river Arno and will shortly arrive in Pisa.
In Pisa we stay at Hotel La Torre.
Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, Pisa.
Corso Italia is the street leading to the centre and the tower.
15.08 We have ascended the train that will take us from La Spezia to Pisa. Only thing left now is waiting for departure.
15.19 Yet another Italian train journey has begun. We have covered a lot of kilometres on the Italian rail network through the years. 15.42 Right now we are not moving at all. I really don't know why we are standing still. No information has been given. 15.43 It paid off to wonder. Now, we move again. I , however, still not know why we were standing still. We are, because of this, behind schedule. 15.57 Marble blocks, hewn as well as plastered, can be seen in quantities on both sides of the railway. We are in Carrara, known for its, marble. The marble from here was used already by the Romans and through the years the material has been used in such diverse places as St. Peter's Basilica, the White house in Washington, the leaning tower of Pisa, Hotel Knaust in Sundsvall and the World Trade Centre in New York. Carrara means, by the way, stone quarries in the old celtic language. 16.06 Roberth thinks back on his previous trip in the area, the one he did with his wife. It is unclear if they stepped off the train in Carrara or the small neighbouring town of Massa. 16.17 We are now closer to the end goal than we ever have been. At the same time, we are farther away from it than we will be. We are fourteen minutes late when we stopped here in Viareggio. 16.41 We have come to Pisa and to the main station Pisa Centrale. Now I strongly believe that we will walk to our hotel. It is located just a short distance from the station. 16.53 It was very very short walk to Hotel La Torre (Hotel Tower). The hotel doors were locked and we had to ring a bell to be buzzed in. The passports were left in the reception to a lady with a raspy voice. She instructed us about the keys, one to the outer door and one to the room door. While she checks the passports, we are now in room 124.
Arno is going through both Florence and Pisa.
We are approaching the main attraction in Pisa.
The leaning tower in Pisa.
Roberth and an unusual tower.
The top part of the tower.
Few tourists can read. It´s actually forbidden to enter the grass.
17.19 We got our passports back but forgot to ask about the code to the internet, the Wi-Fi. We have time enough when we get back to ask for it. Right now, we are on a square, Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II. We shall not remain here much longer. There is a tower to see in the city.
17.41 After walking along the shopping street of Corso Italia and re-crossing the river Arno, we are now in Piazza Garibaldi. We have also been searching for some minor snacks like candy and ice cream. We need a snack, a little extra energy. On to the tower! 18.00 Vehicles pass through a gate in what may be an old city wall. Now it's not far to the cathedral and one of the world's more famous failed buildings. Behind us are the remains of an old roman public baths, Bagni di Nerone. 18.14 There are plenty of people here at Pisa's leaning tower. We are at yet another of the world's attractions. The tower is ever so white and beautiful to watch. In addition to tourists, are heavily armed soldiers, shame that it is needed. 18.44 It is according to the signs in Italian and English are forbidden to enter the lawn at the cathedral and the tower. Either the people here rebels or illiterate. There are plenty of people on the lawn. 19.17 We took a walk in random. It was not so good, we ended up "off the beaten track". With the help of the blue dots in the Roberth's mobile, Blaupunkt, we are now in Piazza Dante Alighieri. We rest for a moment on the benches here.
Battistero di San Giovanni.
Cattedrale di Pisa.
Peter did something to the tower.
Christer at Piazza del Duomo.
Christer and Peter are navigating in old Pisa.
A good Birra Moretti together with tonight´s pizza.
19.34 There will be pizza in Pisa. We finally found the pizzeria/restaurant Il Montino which we had read good reviews about it in our guide book. It was tricky to find the way here but it managed to last. The waiter is an Indian, the ones from Asia. On our journey, we have learned that a litre of diesel costs 1,37 euro/litre here.
20.20 There is one thing with pizza in Italy, it is always good! Now we are going to walk back. 20.35 Arno glitters beautifully in the light from the streetlights. Some ambitious young women are practicing rowing on the river. 20.56 We have desperately searched for some kind of food store. We want to have something for the evening buffet. We found shops but one had either ham or wine, it may be due to the fact that it was a muslim shop. At last we got a hold of wine in a store. Now we go to the hotel. We must not forget to ask about the Wi-Fi code. 21.20 The reception is empty, the staff has gone home for the day. Luckily we had our own key to the front door. There will be no Wi-Fi code. A little sad that it is no staff here. 22.17 It is really nice here in Italy. We enjoy from early morning to late evening.
Some people are rowing on the river.
Evening by the river Arno.
Pinocchio.
08.42 Now it has been a week since the trip began and I sat on the train from the railway station in Örnsköldsvik. Today, awaits a trip of the shorter kind. We should leave Pisa and move to the neighbouring town of Lucca. We will remain in Tuscany until the trip home on Sunday morning.
09.47 There are hotels that give us good memories and there are other hotels. This hotel, Hotel La Torre is of the latter kind. Everything is very simple here. The breakfasts, which up until now has been a delight has today made us less happy. The supply was thin and the staff's effort was pale, uninspiring. In addition, it provides no plus points as the staff head home in the evening and leave the hotel unattended during the late evening and night. I guess this is what it´s like in cities like Pisa, you get guests, no matter how the hotel is. 10.45 To make the trip carry on, we will now leave room 124. 11.13 Things continues to go well. Roberth has made a classic pharmacy visit. He has bought a nasal spray and a nail clipper. At the railway station we bought the tickets to our next destination. The first ticket machine was moody, unwilling to give in or is it out. 11.16 It is a while before our train departs. We have therefore decided to leave the station area in the hope to get hold of a nice coffee place nearby.
They are waiting for coffee in the sun.
Three tourists at a café.
It´s time to leave Pisa.
At the platform Peter looks short again.
We have arrived in Lucca. Where exactly are we? Where should we go?
The city walls of Lucca.
11.36 While waiting for the train, we have ordered a little of each at a café in the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II. It is nothing less than Café Kinzica. We drink Americanos and Macchiatone. When Christer and I wanted something to the coffee we had to walk away and point out which pastries we wanted to have.
11.49 It is incredibly nice to sit in the warm sun on an Italian square and just enjoy life. Unfortunately, time flies and we must begin to move towards the train. 12.25 Bye Pisa! Now as the grumpy conductor have checked our tickets, we go on to Lucca. It smells new in the cart. This train has not been used much. 12.36 Before the stop at the station Pisa San Rossore the conductor spoke with two English-speaking tourists in the cart. Something was wrong with their tickets. They might not have been validated. They had to get off and now we want to go on without them. They'll probably go by the next train. To go with non-validated tickets in Italy is the same thing as to go completely without tickets and can lead to hefty fines. 12.44 The departed tourists have stepped on again. Have they been away and fixed something, money for their fines, or validated tickets, who knows? 13.00 After having made what may have been the shortest train trip between two "spend the night-destinations" ever, 24 kilometres, we are now on a park bench in Lucca. We are behind a equestrian statue. The place is called Piazzale Risorgimento. We are sitting here and are figuring out how we should proceed in the most efficient way to get to our next home. 13.28 "Blaupunkt function" in Roberth's telephone has taken us to the Residence Buonamici which is not a hotel, there are a number of rooms/apartments that are rented out privately. After a short wait, we were let in by the hostess's son, made the hostess discover us, and finally been shown up to our room which is rather an apartment. Here are three beds, kitchenette, table, etc. In addition, a balcony, a terrace with unromantic view against what we believe is a school.
Our apartment at Residence Buonamici.

Which one is mine?
You never say no to a delicious Italian pizza.
Behind the wall you´ll find the best parts of Lucca.
Via Vittorio Emanuele II, Lucca.
13.53 Now as a minor mystery is solved, we can go out for lunch. What then had happened? Well, my passport bag was seemingly disappeared without a trace. It turned out that it had fallen down from the bed and slipped in under the bedspread. Last summer, it was kidnapped and returned in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and now this. It is now time for lunch. It will not be eaten here. We need to go out.
14.10 We know where and what we're going to have lunch. We found a suitable restaurant in the immediate vicinity of where we live. Now, it would be good with a beverage list. Today it's lunch at Ristorante Felice (http://www.pizzeriafelice.it). 14.22 The beverage list appeared. Roberth and I'll share a half litre of wine, Montecarlo Rosso in 2015. Christer who rather drink beer, to pizza, will refrain from wine drinking. 15.32 It was a typical Italian lunch, tasty and somehow filling. We left the restaurant, walked toward the more central parts, and went under/through the city the wall. We followed the Via Vittorio Emanuele II towards the city centre. This king, Victor Emmanuel II seems to haunt us. Now we are in Piazza Napoleone. Roberth has a little bit left to eat on their newly purchased ice cream cone. My cone however, is consumed. Here in the square a little of each is sold in the various stalls. 15.39 It has become time to say something about Lucca, the city we are in. It are often a bit forgotten in the shadow of Pisa and Florence, but it is a real gem. Here are about 90 000 inhabitants, and from here came the opera composer Puccini. Among other things he has written, La Bohème and Tosca.

Piazza Napoleone, Lucca.
Teatro del Giglio.
Piazza San Michele with Chiesa di San Michele in Foro.
Piazza dell´Anfiteatro has another shape because of the location of a roman theatre here.
A very Italian bicycle.
15.51 A new walk took us to a new piazza, a new public square. This time it is Piazza San Michele with its associated architectural beauties. In the middle of the square is the Chiesa di San Michele in Foro. The church is dedicated to St. Michael the archangel, and is built on the city's old roman square (forum).
16.12 The piazza we are on now is not like any other. Because it is round and called the Piazza dell Anfiteatro. As suggested by its name, it has sooner been a roman amphitheatre right in this place. Today, the square is filled with screaming school children playing with the balls. A ball has just hit Christer. 16.33 It is not easy to find our way here in Lucca. Despite the map, we have walked in wrong direction countless times. To a certain extent this can be blamed on poor signage. 16.59 We have now paid the entrance fee and walked the many steps up the tower Torre Guinigi. It was really worth the hike. Very beautiful views are warmly welcomed. Someone has planted oaks here, 40 metres up from the street level. It is windy here but the view is wonderful. The tower is from the 1300´s. 17.11 We take a new break on the ground level. There will be coffee at the Bistro 11 11 or Bistro undici undici. We are in Piazza Antelminelli. We sit right next to a fountain and the church of the Duomo di San Martino. Roberth has taught the waitress a little bit of Swedish. 18.25 After the purchase of the buffet as well as breakfast products in a grocery shop, we are once again at home. Since breakfast is not included here, we have purchased one each. 19.15 By heating the water on our little stove, and then turn it over the instant coffee I have with me, we've got us a cup of coffee each.
Climbing the stairs in Torre Guinigi.
Wonderful views from 40 meters tall Torre Guinigi.
You can see most of Lucca from the top of the tower.
Christer and Lucca.
Roberth and some Italian pillows.
From Undici Undici you can look at Duomo di San Martino.
20.18 It is not hot in our room. Cold is a more appropriate word. For the moment, we are looking for possible dinner options, not in the room but rather on the internet. Do we want to have more pizza and/or pasta? Do we want more wine? Maybe it will be something completely different? We'll see when we are inside the centre again.
21.02 Trattoria da Leo (http://trattoriadaleo.it), will be our dining place. We strolled around at random in the city and found a street we have not walked before and there it was, one of the restaurants we had read about. Outside, everything seemed quiet and still but indoors there were plenty of people and frantic activity. We probably got the last available table. 21.32 This feels like a good choice, the restaurant feels genuine and authentic. There are many locals here. It is usually a good sign. 22.54 The meal ended with delicious desserts, ice cream, sorbet and almond cake. Roberth and I also drank coffee and a good liqueur. When the bill came, the liqueurs were not included, thank you! A restaurant where it was divine to be. Now we are back in Residence Buonamici for the last real evening of the trip. Tomorrow is also the last sleep in. 23.32 Chianti wine, Scamorza cheese and cured ham. Evening buffet is not bad when you are in Italy. Now it is the end of them for this time.
Lucca in a darker version.
Peter and Roberth are having dinner at Trattoria da Leo.
The fish was this big!
Christer´s dinner.
Roberth is resting outside Trattoria da Leo.
Late evening buffet in our apartment.
08.52 Another night of good sleep is about to end. The apartment was eventually warmer. Maybe the hostess turned up the heat when we arrived. This is the day when we shall prepare for the trip home. The time has come to arrange with the breakfast here at Residence Buonamici.
09.41 Breakfast has been consumed and we have drawn up the guidelines for this final day in Italy. The idea is that we are going to take us to our hotel near the airport in Florence and make some interesting stops along the way. 10.52 We paid 90 euros to the hostess Laura and 4,50 euros to local tax authorities. Sometimes such tax is included in the price, but not here. We have now left our accommodation behind us and are up on the wide city wall. Up here you can walk, ride a bike and drive a car. 11.03 Something is being prepared up on the city wall. Distance is being checked and some form of timing seems to be in order. There may be a running race or possibly a bicycle race. 11.36 We left the wall and went to the railway station. Tickets were bought before we went to the nearby Caffeteria Landucci. From today's news, it can be mentioned that former Giro d'Italia winner Michele Scarpone has died in a bike accident. 11.46 It is not only we who drink coffee here. Some Norwegian parents with young children are here as well.
We are walking on the Lucca city wall.
Wonderful green colours.
We are buying new train tickets.
Another "before the train-coffee" at Caffeteria Landucci.
We will explore Pistoia.
Largo Treviso, Pistoia.
12.07 We are once again on a platform. France is preparing for the presidential election.
12.32 Roberth feels safe. There are people that speak Italian here on the train from Lucca to Pistoia. Arrividerci, ciao, Lucca! The question is what we do with our luggage in Pistoia. Are there lockers or baggage consignment? Otherwise, we simply bring them with us when we walk around the city. 13.20 We didn't find any place to leave the luggage at the station of Pistoia. However, there were lots of teenagers who for some unclear reason had gathered outside the station. We have walked on the Via XX Settembre and are soon in the city centre. On the way here, we saw an elderly gentleman with blood in the face. Some ladies assisted him to wipe away the blood. Had he fallen over? Right now we are having a short break on a bench before carrying on walking. 13.42 An ambulance came and stopped by the bloody gentleman before we left the bench. We got up and walked on. We have been in the heart of the city, Piazza del Duomo and looked at the cathedral, Cattedrale di San Zeno. It is also known as simply the Duomo di Pistoia. Along a narrow little street, we found at last a lunch restaurant, La Nicchia Sulla Sala Pizzeria & Drinkeria. 14.02 We sit comfortably here at the restaurant but a stubborn cold wind sweeps along the street and destroys a bit of the experience. 14.33 When we counted the coins in payment a female beggar arrived. She wanted 50 cents. We said we had little money ourselves and wondered if she could assist us. She didn't like our proposition. It is me who is the beggar, she said, and left. Roberth noted that it is time to go home when we start begging from the beggars.
Roberth is ready for lunch.
Via del Lastrone, Pistoia.
We´ve just had a meal at La Nicchia Sulla Sala.
Roberth is taking some photos of Chiesa San Giovanni Fuorcivitas.
It´s time to leave Pistoia.
14.44 It is a challenge to walk around in a city without a map. We are looking around in the city with a hope to find a way back to the railway station. We keep on getting lost, walk in circles and don't really know where we are. Now we have in all cases found a church. Nothing unusual, certainly in Italy.
15.09 We have, with the support of Roberth's "Blaupunkt-function" on the phone, found the way back to the railway station. 15.19 The last train trip here in Italy has begun. Everything and everyone is here. It feels good. This train ride will be extremely short, barely any sense to sit. 15.35 The train was left at the station of Prato Centrale. We are in the for many unknown city of Prato. The city, however, is large, it is counted as the third largest city in the central Italy (after Rome and Florence) and has 191 000 inhabitants. Now we are sitting in the park opposite the train station. The next hours and our economy is planned and structured. 16.12 The sun is shining and in the city we've seen some bunch of old men. They discussed eagerly about something along the river. We are now sitting on the stairs in front of the Cattedrale di Santo Stefano in the Piazza del Duomo. On the way here, we have scared away a huge flock of doves, wandered through a gate, seen a carousel and much more.

We are walking along the river Bisenzio.
Groups of old men gather near the river.
Through Mercatale gate we walk towards more central parts.
Peter is in a hurry across the bridge.
Christer and Roberth at Piazza del Comune.
16.48 It happens a lot of things here in Prato. First, Christer and I withdrew more euros from an ATM at Piazza San Francesco. Then we went on to a square (Piazza Santa Maria delle Carceri), with a fortress/a castle that resembled the classic old grey Lego castle. There was also the church of Santa Maria delle Carceri and a car waiting at a, so typically for us, bridal couple. Now we have now met a parade that celebrated something. People from different professions are walking in a parade with Italian flags and majestic music. First and last, drove emergency vehicles with flashing lights.
17.25 We end the stay here in Prato with the long-awaited ham sandwiches and beverages at a café at the railway station. For my part, the beverage was a glass of wine. 17.45 We are now sitting outside the station and hope to get a hold of a taxi that can drive us to our last Italian hotel. It turns out to be harder than we thought. Not a single taxi is visible and it seems to be others who are waiting as well. A, to say the least, worn-out girl has just visited us and asked us for money for a bus ticket. There are also buses from here the station area. 17.54 The hope of finding a taxi faded. We went to buy train tickets to the nearby Florence to from there take a taxi. Christer took a last look outside the station and baboom, there it was, suddenly, a white taxi. Now we have placed ourselves in it and have just put on the seat belts.

We heard music and suddenly they came walking.

Coffee, sandwiches and a glass of wine at Prato Centrale.
18.35 Our taxi spun around a bit in the outskirts of Prato and then went along the E35, at least I think so, before we got to the Hotel Novotel Firenze Nord Aeroporto in Sesto Fiorentino, a Florence suburb. We checked in and the elevator took us to the our floor and we went to room 411. Here it is a double bed and a single bed. We have booked a double bed and two single beds. Now we go down and complain.
18.50 Our complaints first led to the various excuses and information that we actually had booked the room we got. We strongly denied that it was the case. We didn't get a new room, instead a camping bed has been carried in room 411. Not much of service and far from smooth. We booked a room at Booking.com that does not seem to exist in reality. As usual, it is the worst service at the most expensive hotels. 20.14 Roberth has just come back from the tub. This has inspired me and the tub is about to get filled for my bath. 20.57 It was refreshing with a bath, I wonder when I last took a tub bath on any of the trips? Now, we should in all cases visit the hotel restaurant for dinner. 21.38 Dinner is ordered. We are avoiding wine this last night. It was simply too expensive. 22.12 Not much food appeared on our dinner plates, but now everything is consumed. For the food and shelter we have paid 61,06 € each here. Things went wrong with the change. They had at first nothing at all to give me, and the same thing happened to Christer. All they had for him was a wish for a good night. He was not pleased with just that. He finally got his change and now we are ready to sleep. It is a really early ascent tomorrow.
We looked down on a pool we don´t have time to use.
Our room at Hotel Novotel Firenze Nord Aeroporto.
Is it art or has a kid been drawing on the wall?
The huge hotel lobby.
Waiting for the dinner.
04.13 We are awake again. It is very early on, but it'll probably go well anyway. This was the sour aftertaste we knew would come after all life satisfaction during our trip. Not much remains of our stay in Italy.
04.40 It's time to leave the room. Our booked taxi is hopefully waiting for us. 05.19 A short highway transportation along, what I think was E76 and check-in was without any problems. It also went smoothly in the security control. Now, we eat breakfast. The sandwiches are huge, it is all very well, but the appetite is modest this time of the day. We are thus back at the Florence airport, Aeroporto di Firenze (Aeroporto Amerigo Vespucci).
Airport breakfast earlier than early.
05.44 Breakfast was a good start of this day of transport. Now we are waiting to get on board. We go in the exact same route home as when we flew down. We shall therefore first take us to Dusseldorf in Germany.
06.25 A crowded small bus is waiting to take us to the Air Berlin plane to Düsseldorf.GERMANY
09.27 I did not see much of the views during the flight. It was mostly sleep. Now we have landed at the airport in Düsseldorf, changed gate and boarded a new plane. There was not much time for any other activities.
10.20 In order to allay the craving of caffeine and reduce the amount of small coins has Roberth and I bought coffee. Here and there in the plane, it says NIKI. It relates to the Austrian airline Niki, founded by racing driver Niki Lauda. It feels weird. We fly with Air Berlin, or?
Early morning flight to Germany.
We will soon land in Düsseldorf.
We are flying over the river Rhine.
SWEDEN
12.05 With a slight delay we landed at the airport. Now we are waiting for our luggage. Something honks, but the band still stands. Ah, now it moves.
12.26 All the luggage we wanted came. Then we left the luggage band, there were some who were waiting for their luggage in and luggage waiting for their owners. Some of the bags went around and around on the band. Now we have said good bye and thanks to Roberth. He will head directly to the domestic terminal fly back home to Östersund. Christer and I are on our now classic bench. 13.15 Today's lunch was, as so often at Alfredo's. There was no menu or table serving this time. It might depend on whether it is lunch offer or not? 14.14 After lunch, we have provisioned, and prepared ourselves for the train travel to the north. Within half an hour we are on the way. This applies, of course, that it runs as it should and not as it was when we were going home around new year's. 14.46 Certain it went well. Now we go to the train for the last time in a while. 15.57 It is a small world. The wife of one of my mom's cousins is on the same train. We have talked a little bit about this and that. A few rows behind me sits a woman who lives in my neighbouring house in Bjästa. 17.55 Christer is leaving the train since he is at home in Sundsvall. For me, it remain two hours of train travel. Next both of us will conclude our work and plan for the summer. This Italy trip has been amazing. We have had a great time and a lot of fun. It has sometimes been unnecessarily expensive, but why go to Italy if you do not allow yourself to enjoy?
We are back where it all started, Arlanda airport.
