Friday 12th of July

07.39 The sunlight is looking into our room. I have slept well. Imagine what a little sleep can do for a man. We're still in Yogyakarta and the Summer Season Boutique Hotel. It´s the first time we are sleeping in a city starting with a Y. The city is sometimes spelled Jogjakarta but we do not want to acknowledge that.

08.55 The breakfast is over. It was served on the patio outside the lobby and they offered rice, noodles, meat, coffee, ice tea, cereal, milk, toast and cheese. Christer, who has been ill but is getting better, is refreshed but feel tired, drained of energy. He needs more energy and also taking it easy today.

10.01 Now we pack down our umbrellas in our small backpacks. It is always good to be prepared even if the sun shines. It's just silly to have brought the umbrellas and then just leave them in the room. We have done so far too often over the years.

10.41 We've walked through Yogyakarta filled with heat and eager salesmen. We walked along the crowded street Jalan Malioboro with all their offers for transports of various kinds (horse drawn carriages, rickshaws, etc.) and then proceeded south.

10.57 After Patricia had asked for directions a few times, we´ve now made it to the old sultan palace, the Kraton. The Yogyakarta area was once its own monarchy, a sultanate from 1755 to 1945. Hamengku Buwono X is the current sultan. He remains even though the city is incorporated in the Republic of Indonesia. Now we're going to catch our breaths and gather energy before we look around here.

Our street, Jalan Sosrowijayan. Tourists gather here.

Summer Season Boutique Hotel.

Time to explore Yogyakarta.

Jalan Malioboro, one of the main streets in Yogyakarta.

Many different transport options on offer. We prefer walking.

A useful tourist map, thank you!

11.07 There is limited opening hours here at Kraton because of the fasting month of Ramadan. They might possibly close already at the prayer which takes place at noon, about an hour from now. A guide was included in the admission but Patricia and we explained to the female guide that we wished to wander around on our own with our own plans.

11.20 We are walking slowly around in the old sultan’s palace. It’s very beautiful to see. We have seen buildings, palanquins and various kitchen items. The area is a museum and guarded by museum guards in traditional clothes sitting on chairs and scouts.

11.49 We have taken photos, looked a little at a souvenir kiosk but neither bought the postcard or t-shirts that we looked out. Something we need is stamps but maybe we can buy them at the entrance at the saw small post office we saw there.

12.22 A bit more of the palace were seen before we started searching us homeward. It was called to prayer from the minarets when we walked out of the gates. We managed to meet an 81-year-old lady inside the palace area. The lady was a real character. She believed that Patricia was happy because she had two husbands, Christer and me. She claimed that she was Superman and apparently also the sultan's wife adding a smile. She said many other things, among others; she rattled off the names of various Asian countries and talked about noodles. It was hard to get some context in the whole thing but the lady was a fun acquaintance. The small post office was unfortunately closed.

12.51 On the way home we went into the Flexi Minimarket to buy something to drink and into the post office to buy stamps. It went just fine in both places. The post office was housed in a truly majestic building. While in Africa we saw post offices in real lavish palaces. At home in Sweden the post offices can be found inside a petrol station. Now we are back at the hotel for a shower and a short rest. The planned visit to the UNESCO listed Borobudur temple outside Yogyakarta will just be a plan. There are several reasons. Firstly, transport possibilities are worse now during Ramadan but we also think of Christer's current and Patricia and my future health. Its hot today and we have already made an excursion. Borobudur is a world famous Buddhist temple built in the 700- and 800’s.

We are on our way to Kraton, the sultan´s palace in Yogyakarta.

Pavilions inside the beautiful palace area.

The inner courtyard at the Kraton.

Peter and Christer outside the entrance to the palace/museum Kraton.

Peter is a copy.

Museum guards in traditional clothes.

We met an old interesting lady at the Kraton.

Christer bought refreshments in the tropical heat.

Behind the legs.

13.58 We have sought us out to lunch. Now we ordered it on Batik Resto, a restaurant near our hotel. We looked for FM Cafe and thought that was where we ended up when we saw the sign”Ef Em Resto” but it will probably be fine to eat here even though it would not be the same restaurant. Here sits the other pale skinned persons. As in so many other destinations western tourists gather in clusters in the restaurants serving European/American cuisine or restaurants mentioned in guidebooks.

15.01 The food arrived and it was much needed to get the nutrition. It may have been so that Patricia was the only guest at the restaurant who was of Asian origin. We have returned to the room and Patricia is smearing the ointment Zam - Buk on Christer's stiff neck. It will be good for the muscles.

17.35 We are, after a little rest, out on the streets of Yogyakarta again. We had just gone out as we met the Dutch Esther again. She had been given a room in a place some distance away from our hotel. Now we are at the Cafe Kopi Luwak in Malioboro Mall. Here I'll try a cup of the world's most expensive coffee, Kopi Luwak. It is extracted from the droppings of the Asian palm civet. The animals eat only the best varieties of coffee berries and after passing the animal's digestive system, the coffee beans are picked from the feces for cleaning and roasting. It's an expensive coffee but I do like to try new things, mainly coffee.

18.26 The waitress put down a wooden tray with brass handles. On it stood a cup in china with a porcelain lid. The lid was crowned by a gilded palm civet, luwak. In addition, there was a thin pouch that contained information, two packages of sugar, but not least a bag of coffee powder. This powder was poured into the cup. Hot water was pored over; she moved on and put the lid on. I was asked to wait a minute. This was done. The coffee had an intense but mild flavor. There is nothing I will drink daily and it depends mainly on the price. Now the cards written and stamps are in position. What’s next? Well what do I know? It is great here. We also checked Facebook and other interesting things on Patricia's Ipad.

The nice tourist area in Yogyakarta,

Peter has finally tested the world's most expensive coffee, Kopi Luwak.

The Indonesian currency rupiah contains many zeros.

19.24 In the end we left the laziness and the expensive coffee behind us. We bought something sweet for the evening at the grocery store Hero. Christer was also looking desperately for a place with t-shirts that he swears he saw here yesterday. It was not found. On the way home I found a mailbox so that we could mail the postcards. Once in the lobby, I asked for the key to room 206 instead of room 306. Yesterday I tried to open room 304, tonight; I tried to fool myself into the 206. Now we plan our remaining days here in the city.

20.19 We sought us out for food, dinner this time. We searched us into a Gang (alleyway) a little beyond our home. It will be dinner at the small restaurant”Mi Casa Es Tu Casa” (http://www.micasaestucasa.mye.name) which has a Spanish (Basque) owner. I'm looking to try a dish that I never tried before.

21.04 When we got our rice was too badly cooked, we are now waiting for the next load. The restaurant is well-attended and a Buddha in sunglasses observes everything that goes on in here.

21.54 My dinner tonight was grilled python and cobra. The meat did not have much flavor and texture reminded most about pork. It was the sauce that was the big flavour. There have been some new animals on the menu this summer. Will there be even more? We'll see.

The exciting menu at the restaurant Mi Casa Es Tu Casa.

Saturday 13th of July

06.55 Just before I woke up, I dreamed that I was listening to a song. The refrain was, ”keep on moving to the sea." Does this song exist in reality or has my subconscious created a hit? Today it is once again that date on our travels that we associate with strange and almost spectacular events, 13th of July. The day has at least started with a strange dream.

08.01 Our breakfasts were finished without any problems. Only packing remains when it comes to our activities at this hotel. Yogyakarta has been a pleasant city to visit. However, it feels like we just scratched the surface of what there is to see and do here. So it's often is when you are doing long trips and want to visit many places.

08.51 We checked out of the hotel and walked towards the railway station. We concluded that a taxi was an unnecessary luxury given the short distance. The walk went smoothly. Along the way, we noticed that they here in Yogyakarta uses in addition to the Latin alphabet also the ancient Javanese letters resembling the south Indian and Thai. The signs are always written with two alphabets. We quickly and easily bought three train tickets. Once aboard the wagon four, I was putting myself in the wrong location, seat. Everything worked out though. Now we are waiting for the start. We shall go about sixty kilometers to the northeast.

09.59 Without much trouble we roll through the Javanese countryside. We pass rice fields, low houses in varied condition, and now and then a mosque. We are heading to Yogyakarta’s conservative twin city Surakarta or as here in Indonesia by locals better known as Solo. Surakarta is only used on maps and official documents. The similarities with rival Yogyakarta are many, there have been a sultan and the city also has a palace area, a ”Kraton”, but at much worse condition. Solo was also the capital of the ancient Islamic kingdom of Mataram.

Patricia and Peter are heading towards the train station in Yogyakarta.

Two tourists ready to travel on.

10.46 The train ride was comfortable and went pretty quickly. We haven’t travelled that far today. Here we go with a taxi to our new address. The city looks nice with many trees and a civilized traffic culture. The driver has driven for a while and the price of the trip as Patricia first thought was really expensive seems more reasonable now. We had misjudged the distance from the train station to the hotel.

10.51 Now we are sitting in the lobby of Hotel Anugerah Palace. Our rooms are not ready yet. We have taken the opportunity to sit down for a moment to feel the calm and wait for answers. Here we have guessed room number again. Patricia guess, 211, I 209 and Christer, 315. There is apparently a teacher conference at the hotel. It should be easy for us to blend in. We are apparently the only guests who are here for other reasons than the conference.

11.14 The guessing was not so good. We stay in room 202 and Patricia room is not even ready as I write this.

11.46 Patricia's room is also ready now. She will stay in room 210. Christer and I rest a while before lunch.

12.40 There was a knock on the room door. Our rest came to an end. It was Patricia with her friend Nevi who wants to meet and hang out with us today. She is an old colleague of Patricia who now runs her own company in her hometown Salatiga. The city is located northwest of Solo where we are now. Now the four of us will go out and eat. We’ll see where it is and what food we choose.

Our hotel in Solo, Anugerah Palace.

Patricia and Nevi lunching at the Korean restaurant Happy Bee.

Lunch break.

Santo Petrus (St Peter´s) Catholic church in Solo.

Easy walking along the Solo City Walk.

Patricia calls and arranges transport for tomorrow.

Similarities?

13.06 The Gang of Four has left Hotel Anugerah Palace and walked towards one of the city's shopping malls, Solo Grand Mall. Here we have after some thinking, placed us at the Korean restaurant Happy Bee.

13.23 You could choose from various combinations and the dishes came quite quickly in boxes. During the meal both Indonesian and English were spoken, yes even a bit of Swedish between us. Our next problem is to find a solution regarding the journey from here tomorrow. It's hard to relax and see the city before it is resolved.

13.55 Lunch is over. It's really nice having company, even more enjoyable with good company. Next is a walking tour in the city. It is, unlike the cities in Sumatra, despite the large population here relatively easy to move around on foot.

13.58 We walk along the wide walkway Solo City Walk which runs parallel to the main street Jalan Slamet Riyadi. It is pure luxury in this country to walk this undisturbed on a spacious walk able surface.

14.04 Patricia called the bus company we planned to go with tomorrow. There are apparently only two seats left on the bus. How do we do now? Should one of us stand? Should we take the train back to Yogyakarta and go on from there? Are there any direct trains from here?

14.29 We're not much wiser when it comes to transportation. Now we are sitting at the entrance to Taman Sriwedaria. This is at least written above the entrance. A strange thing when it comes to transportation problems is the fact that it was not possible to book when Patricia called a little earlier. Now suddenly there are only two seats left. However it is the thirteenth of July. What else to expect?

15.17 Hip hip and hooray! Things are OK. Patricia has organized a door-to-door transportation. She found a company that runs the same distance with minivans. Now we can continue to explore Solo but not solo. We're still four.

15.25 A brief stop was made at the Museum Radya Pustaka. Our female friends are looking for a toilet. Here, we have seen some old stone objects. There is a beginning overcast. Hope we do not have rain.

16.00 We have taken aim at the newly built Paragon Mall near the giant hotel Hotel Paragon. Here we found a cafe in a well known coffee shop chain, a chain called Starbucks. We were, at the orders, asked as so many times before about our names so that these could be written on the mugs. In Christer's mug says, Mr. Christ. Sweet Jesus, so it can go! Christer is feeling better today but the stomach is still out of balance, so he chose cool black currant drink instead of black coffee.

A nice break at Starbucks Coffee in Paragon Mall.

Buying durian or not, that is the question.

17.28 We finished our beverages and wandered around in Paragon Mall looking at various things. We bought some evening beverages and something for tomorrow’s trip at Carrefour, a food chain that we have been at before in some other countries.

18.01 We left Carrefour behind us and now we are, under the management of Nevi, outside and in the beginning darkness there. We are on our way towards the evening's restaurant, a local place that will be something unique and special. She stops occasionally and asks to be sure that we are on the right track.

18.26 We have, after a lot of walking and asking, come to tonight's restaurant, Nasi Liwet Bu Wongso Lemu. We took off our shoes before we entered. It is a small restaurant with only a few low tables. It serves only one dish. It will be easy to order. A ukulele playing man entertains us with playing and songs. It feels more like are at someone’s home than we are at the restaurant. Christer thinks of his currently sensitive stomach and lay low with local food at restaurants right now.

19.05 There was a taxi back home. It was probably the best thing to do. I highly doubt that I had found the home or even made it.

19.18 Christer has just realized that the local medicine for upset stomach, Entrostop, given to him by Patricia is truly effective. It allows him to keep running as usual, though the previous viral infection created havoc in the digestive system.

20.32 We are now at Es Teler 77. It is a restaurant at Solo Grand Mall. It has become Christer’s turn to eat some kind of dinner. I am having a cappuccino.

21.19 It became Nasi Goreng with oxtail and vegetables for Christer. It was a spicy dish, hard to finish it all. Now we're back in the lobby here at the hotel. We’ll try a little surfing on the internet but their Wi-Fi seems dull, dead. In our foreheads, it is wet.

23.38 Yet another eventful 13th of July has reached its end. The day began in Yogyakarta and via a train ride and a city tour have taken us to this note. Now it is time for a well-deserved sleep.

Nasi Liwet Wongso Lemu, a different dinner restaurant. There is only one dish on the menu.

Christer refuses to eat because of health reasons.

Sunday 14th of July

07.47 Christer just opened the bread he bought yesterday. He broke off a piece, chewed and rinses it down with water. A new morning is here, one morning which soon will turn into a new day.

08.47 It is only we who eat breakfast right now. The teachers at the conference have a sleep in or have already checked out. Over an hour remain before the next transport is here. It is peaceful and quiet hotel we were staying at. Both Christer and I wish it was as calm and quiet in our digestive systems.

09.23 New deal, the transport (minibus) that would come at 10.00 will apparently come and pick us up at 09.30. Now it will be a panic packing with the risk that something is left behind.

09.37 We have checked out. A wait for the transport in hotel lobby has begun. I guess that half past nine wasn’t right.

09.40 The transport is here. It is time to travel on.

We are at the minibus terminal Gilingan waiting for our transport.

Peter kills some time by reading in his book.

Patricia is wondering when our bus will depart.

09.55 We’re on the way. We have made a short stop. Two passengers have stepped in. This is just part transport. It will take us out to the bus station and to the real vehicle.

10.18 Now we are sitting on a bench at the bus station Gilingan. The tickets are paid for and I owe Christer 20,000 rupiah. Now we and the others wait for the next minibus to take us on.

11.06 The forthcoming vehicle has arrived. Some small white boxes were waiting for us on the seats. They contained a plastic cup with water, a chocolate biscuit and a small bag of Camilan Top. I do not know what the last thing is. It might be; nuts, strips or whatever.

12.30 Camilan Top was either nuts or strips. It was some sort of snack simply, perhaps a potato based one. We travel at a leisurely pace to the east and the rain is falling.

13.53 The speed increased more and more before it come to a stop at the restaurant Saradan Asri. We are over an hour ahead of schedule. That's just fine by me! We are in Saradan, near Madiun, at least according to the signs here.

Some bus snacks was included in the fare.

A motorcyclist and a rice field, a few examples of what we passed this day.

Peter, Christer and today's transport vehicle.

14.09 The break is over. It was nice to stretch our legs and be able to drink without worrying about a lack of toilets. We just heard that our driver has not slept in 2 ½ days. I must admit that does not feel quite good. Patricia is sitting next to the driver and she has promised to keep an eye on him. Now it's off again. The two others in the vehicle are two young ladies from the Netherlands (again!). The three of us talked for a while with the two of them.

14.50 We just went through Sukum Korah. Though I may have misunderstood what was said by the driver.

15.40 A new stop has been made. It's time to refuel. The driver is rocking the car a bit to fill in another deciliter.

16.33 The bus climbs up along meandering hairpin turns. Around us are lush green trees, small houses and terraces. It's fascinating how very powerful and natural forests that actually fit on this densely populated island

17.24 It is hard to decide whether to be happy about the beautiful scenery and the nice views, or if you should be unhappy over the narrow road and the slow speed we are moving in.

17.43 The rain falls outside our vehicles.

18.08 The darkness is here. When we rolled into Malang our first impressions were to see the city at dusk. We have passed some beautifully lit roundabouts and at least one shopping center has been sighted. We will probably thrive in this city too.

18.20 The mini bus stopped somewhere in the dark and we started to get out. I took the opportunity to bring my garbage bag. When paying for our pre-booked room we took the opportunity to share in the sum at once. At the lift we guessed the room number. Christer believed in room 308 and I guessed 205. Now we live actually in room 308 at Kertanegara Premium Guest House (http://www.kertanegaraguesthouse.com) in Malang. The hotel is wonderfully fresh with beautiful furnishings, a completely fabulous place with regard to the low price.

19.06 We have made ourselves at home in our room. Patricia lives in another room on the same floor.

20.40 We now hope that Christer's stomach will stabilize. The long wandering in Solo yesterday was probably not the best method of getting the infection completely from the body. He needs to eat solid food and get perk up.

Dinner at De Liv Restaurant.

20.57 De Liv is the name of tonight's restaurant. It is located across the street from the hotel. On one wall is one large photograph. The orders are just done. Now it will be good with food. We are entertained with live music and the whole restaurant feels more European than Asian.

22.01 There was plenty of food. Now we're back in the room and the kettle is simmering. We are about to have some coffee

22.14 Patricia thinks he knows what Christer suffers from, namely, ”masuk angin”, a condition which translates to a cold but is more complicated than that. It involves an imbalance in the body and the ill winds affected the body. It's something they talk about often here in Indonesia. There is also medication for ”masuk angin” which directly translated means ”in blowing wind." Right now Patricia puts Kayu Putih oil on Christer´s back. It smells strong and will probably make him burp. This just managed to Christer's great surprise. The scent starts to feel increasingly healthier in the room. The oil is made of cajeput tree and is one of the ingredients of the better known Tiger Balm.

22.54 Whatever affect oil has one the body it made Christer sleepy. Now we both need a good night's sleep.

Kertanegara Premium Guesthouse is our new home.

Monday 15th of July

08.24 Our overall general health is well here in Malang. The sleep has been peaceful. We are waiting for Patricia and then breakfast. Our room does smell a bit strange after Christer treatment with Kayu Putih yesterday. We hope that the fragrance eases before someone from the staff enters our room.

08.57 Patricia has been told that she have to check out of her room today. She may check into another instead. Something has apparently messed up with the bookings.

09.21 We enjoy a good breakfast in the hotel dining room. Christer has not regained full appetite but the lubrication with oil yesterday together with an herbal tea called Tolakangin seems to have done the trick, the health status has quickly turned for the better. A symptom of ”masuk angin” apparently is that some parts of the body feel cold, something that Christer experienced yesterday.

10.39 Some positive news has been given, it was great to have breakfast and Patricia can stay in her room. Now we hope that the positives will continue during the rest of the day. It's time for a city tour and some chores needs to be done in a nearby shopping mall.

11.07 We passed the big green new renovated Gajayana Stadium which can take 35 000 spectators. It is used for football matches and other things. We then went into the Mal Olympic Garden (Olympic Garden Mall). We withdrew some money. Christer got one and a half million rupiah in 50 000-notes so now he's a very fat wallet. It can not even fold up.

Gajayana Stadium in Malang.

Peter is writing in his travel journal outside Olympic Garden Mall.

We walk towards Malang´s center.

Masjid Agung Jami (Great Mosque), Malang.

Alun-Alun, Malang Cyber Park.

The pigeons have their own houses on the square Alun-Alun.

11.13 We left the shopping mall and decided to take a walk towards the city center.

11.30 We've met a lot of students in school uniforms on the way to and from their schools. We passed Immanuel Church and went into a park, Alun - Alun. The church is next door to a big beautiful mosque, Masjid Agung Jami. In the air, hover birds, bubbles and sound from the mosque's muezzin. The birds, mostly pigeons, enter three major bird feeders, bird houses with multiple holes. Christer has announced that today is the first day of school after the holidays. The park we are in is called Malang Cyber Park.

12.09 We bought beverages at Robinson Supermarket in Ramayana mall here in the square. After that Patricia talked to a helpful policeman with a rifle over his shoulder and two taxi drivers. The first one was too expensive but the latter taxi driver had a better offer and price. Now we are heading for today's outing. We are going in a taxi from the Mandala company Argo Taxi.

13.01 The taxi dropped us off below Pohon Inn. It is a hotel that looks like a large tree. Adjacent to it is the magnificent Batu Secret Zoo (http://jawatimurpark2.com) which we’ll visit during the rest of the afternoon. We are on the outskirts of the city of Batu located north of Malang.

We have traveled to Batu north of Malang. Time to visit the zoo.

The unique hotel at Batu Secret Zoo.

Lunch at Jungle Fast Food.

Blue giraffes on the run?

Another primate behind bars.

13.13 Before we seriously look at the animals and we'll have lunch at Resto Jungle / Jungle Fast Food. The restaurant is really special. On the other side of a pane of glass, we can see a leopard lying and resting. One can also sit near several other animal cages and dine while observing the animals at the same time.

14.44 We have now bought tickets and entered the Batu Secret Zoo. Here, we have seen several species of monkeys, ring -tailed lemurs and vampire bats, to name a few of the wonderful species. We have also seen some kangaroos (wallabies). The special thing about these is that they are completely white, albino.

14.57 A small civil war has broken out. A lone donkey is inside a caged area with some llamas (alpacas) and a conflict has occurred.

15.34 It is so peaceful to watch the animals. You should have several days here to see it all and experience it. But I feel sorry for the animals that have cramped cages. Better, then, with the tiger cub that was chained outside one cage. It looked cheerfully at the maras. Did he want to play with them or was he hungry? The urinal here at the zoo is a little different. They are built to resemble mouths of hippos.

Albino kangaroos was an odd sight.

Patricia pats the youing tiger girl Keisha.

A tortoise from the Seychelles eats his snacks.

A beautiful group of friends.

15.57 We totally misjudged the size of this zoo is. The surface is quite small but there are multiple levels and walkways with lots of animals to see. It will be more or less impossible to see all the parts of the area bars. We have visited the giant tortoises from the Seychelles, looked at a swimming pygmy hippopotamus from Liberia and even re- watched our friends from the Brazil trip, capybaras.

16.18 We have gone through the aquarium area at this zoo and seen various exciting fish. There was even a device so that you could photograph 'in' in an aquarium. I also tested to be in an artificial shark's mouth.

16.47 This is a fantastic zoo. It features animals from all corners of the world, elements and groups. It is such a shame that we did not have more time. The last part we were almost jogging through. Luckily there were most African animals there, animals we've seen in the wild in South Africa. They were not new to us. For the third year and the continent in the row, we have also seen a set of snakes.

16.51 A man in a kiosk offered us just a yellow beverage that would help us avoid”Masuk angin”. It should have been given to Christer earlier in the trip.

17.09 The recently started taxi journey home has come to a stop. We go with the same driver who brought us here and are now buying some beverages for the coming time. Everything was bought in a small shop, Infomart. These small Infomart shops are everywhere here in Java, it must be thousands.

One of many interesting inhabitants in the aquariums at Batu Secret Zoo.

Patricia seemingly in the aquarium.

In the shark´s mouth.

You can stand here for a long time and admire the wonderful leopards.

Peter with a new outfit.

17.55 We have returned to Kertanegara Premium Guest House. We are back in Malang and in our cool but a little strange -smelling room. Now let's get some rest before the dinner.

20.11 The energy supplies are loaded, and the bodies are showered. Ahead of us tonight's dinner.

20.24 We listen to a ballad performed by a solo singer. She is backed by a band. We are back at the neighboring restaurant, De Liv. Now I'll be a break in the Asian food tradition and have a pizza.

21.43 I have really nothing to complain about the tasty Indonesian cuisine. But a pizza and a cold beer is actually really good for a change.

23.28 Christer has received an additional treatment of Patricia. She has anointed him with, Minyak Kayu Putih (Cajuput Oil). Yesterday the procedure attracted some belching. Today it first attracted some uncontrolled laughter. Anyway, the treatment works. Christer feel more or less fine again. Now, this day will be put to sleep.
