08.07 Now it has happened! What I a year ago thought impossible and almost laughed at. Donald Trump has been appointed to be the republican president candidate in the elections in the U.S. in November. Here in Kenya, Nakuru it is, as far as I know, a completely ordinary morning.
08.20 The time has come to familiarize ourselves with the breakfast selection. We have had a good night's sleep here at the Eagle Palace Hotel
08.57 After a solid meal, we´re now awaiting an answer on what it might cost to get a private transport to the next place. We are going to get from Nakuru to Lake Naivasha, about two hours' journey to the east. The cheapest option is to find a minibus that can take us to the town of Naivasha and then switch to another vehicle (minibus or taxi) that can take us to our next accommodation at the lake's southern side. It feels uncomfortable, uncertain and awkward. That is why we asked the girl in the reception to call around and ask different drivers about what amount that they want to have for a private transport.
09.01 A small misunderstanding has been sorted out. We do not want to have a one-day excursion with driver to Lake Naivasha. We just want to be let off there. New call, new answer?
09.05 A driver is on the way here to the hotel. We will have to negotiate about the price with him when he turns up.
Morning in Nakuru.
Young school kids ready for a new day.
Peter is on his way.
We are heading to Naivasha.
09.21 Now everything is settled! Christer and I had discussed earlier about what price we thought was reasonable for today's travel and the price the driver gave over the telephone to the reception was completely in sync with what we expected. Now we will mostly take it easy and remain here before the departure at 10.00.
10.02 The hotel wanted 10 000 Kenyan shillings for the room. It was more than we had estimated, but still not a disaster. We´ve had an excellent stay here, but are wondering why the price has gone up. We are now seated in the back of our transport. David, our driver, sits by the wheel. Christer is reading in the newspaper the Daily Nation that was here in the car. One of the news is that a Kenyan, Calvin Vogefu Musalia, has been named Mr. Deaf 2016 (http://www.nation.co.ke/news/Kenyan-makes-history-by-winning-Mr-Deaf-16-title/1056-3302122-69hqeq/index.html). OK, now it is time to refuel the car.
10.57 We are coming closer to the destination. At the side of the road, we have seen zebras. It is, according to the newspaper we read, an ongoing UN conference in Nairobi right now. It focuses on trade and development. Will our upcoming stay in the city be affected by this?
11.22 The phone in the taxi rang. It was a call from the Eagle Palace Hotel. Via the hands-free the driver got to know that we forgot 1800 shillings somewhere in the hotel. Now Christer is talking with the hotel staff to sort out what happened. Where on earth have we forgotten the money?
11.24 Christer has received information from the hotel and it was not really like the driver had said. They seem to have charged us again for yesterday's dinner at the check-out. We had not forgotten some money in the hotel but they wanted to pay back the amount. We might possibly pay less to the driver and he will get the money from the hotel later. We will in all cases not turn back.
We will stay three nights here in room/house number 5.
Peter is resting in our new home.
It´s time to head out and learn more about the surroundings.
Our camp is at Lake Naivasha.
A bird in Lake Naivasha.
Hippo warning near the lakeshore.
11.40 We have passed through Naivasha town and are now going along a path that runs along the east and south shores of Lake Naivasha. The driver has stopped at Wildfire Flowers. He wants to ask about the way. Christer has tried to explain where we are going and that we cannot possibly be at the destination already, but David wants to be sure and ask a few locals.
11.51 We travel further along the lake. Here are lots of greenhouses. They are growing roses here, which are transported to Europe for sale.
12.20 David stopped at Camp Carnelley's (http://www.campcarnelleys.com) in the village of Sulmac. We first went down to the restaurant but then had to turn up to the reception building where a cycling girl showed us where we should stay. This will now be our home for three days. We have room/house 5, a simple room in a simple house with two rooms.
12.41 We have said goodbye to our driver David who did a great job to get us here but had not expected that it was quite so far from Naivasha. Because of it, he wondered if he could get a little more money than what we had said. We agreed and also took his number if we should happen to need his services again.
12.59 Now when we have packed up a few things here in our stone house we will familiarize ourselves with the area that surrounds us here at camp. We'll see what's offered here and examine whether it is possibly possible to get hold of towels. Camp Carnelley's is located right by Lake Naivasha with its wildlife and birdlife.
13.34 Now we know a little bit more about the local area. We have been walking down to the lake and managed to see a few different species of birds and an older couple who tried to raise a tent. Next, we are waiting for our lunch at the restaurant called Lazybones.
This beautiful bird is called Superb starling.
Christer is waiting for lunch at Lazybones.
Peter during lunch.
After a good meal we need coffee.
Peter is writing down some notes down by the lake.
Campers preparing their tent.
15.12 Lazybones restaurant here in the area served us what our bodies wanted, a nice meal. The restaurant is large with a lovely atmosphere. There are a few tables perched on a small terrace with views of the area and there are other tables where you can lie or sit and eat/drink. The only drawback here is that the menu is rather limited. Now we will soon lock our door and head for some reading down by the lake.
15.27 Now our bodies are moved to a low unsteady wooden bench with a table. We are in the large open grassed area by the lake where some of the guests are camping, set their tents. Soon our thoughts shall be moved into the literary world for a moment while the birds around us entertains with various sounds.
16.36 After a nice and relaxing reading time by the lake, we returned to room 5. Outside the house a young English speaking lady was sitting reading. She stays with her boyfriend in the room next to ours. Their room and our is in the same small house. Now let's go and get more information about the surrounding area.
17.09 Our little walk along the main road to the nearby village has been successful. I have withdrawn money in a local ATM and we have arranged with beverages at the DCK Shopping centre, a grand name for a modest movement. Before we went there, we asked at the reception about the Wi-Fi code, but it is not available for everyone in the area. They shall in all cases arrange with the towels to us.
We are walking along this road heading for an unknown destination.
Is the cat customer or staff?
We met a goat gang on our way back.
Camp Carnelley´s.
17.44 On the way home, we met a larger flock of goats. They were probably on their way home. It was good for us to find home again. Our female neighbour was still there and told us that the staff had been here and left the towels. She and her male roommate had been to the nearby Hells Gate National Park on a cycling trip. It is something we also plan to do later during our stay here.
18.57 There is not much to the room that we have here. But it is a area that is ours. Here we can do what we want, in any case, almost what we want. Toilet and shower are a short distance away from our house and hot water is arranged by a few gentlemen that take care of the fires in a large tube behind the toilets/showers. It's a little unclear how it works but there will be extremely hot getting shower water in all cases.
19.58 Room time and the memories from the student years has been put aside. We have in the pitch-black evening, led by a small flashlight, made it back to the restaurant, Lazybones.
21.16 We were served and consumed tasty pizzas and excellent beer. Unfortunately, someone smoked at one of the other tables. Well, we are back in our small rooms again, and the crickets sing for us.
22.28 From the outside we can hear sounds, laughter and even more crickets. However, it is not the crickets that are laughing. Soon we will crawl under the mosquito nets. How will this night be? We fear that it may become cold in our little stone house. The toilet is in a separate building a short distance away. Is it OK to instead go to a bush when we need?
This evening we had pizzas for dinner.
Some last words written down before the night under thye net begins.
08.11 It has been a chilly night in our stone house, but we have managed to keep warm under the nets and blankets. During the early morning Christer has heard the familiar sounds of the hippos a bit away from our house. For my part, I have in the dream world been told not to forget MH 37. I have just been and showered cold under the open sky. However, it was the walls around me in the shower space. In general then, well there is a power failure.
08.54 There is power in the restaurant, Lazybones. It is good because we want to have breakfast. The reason why they have power is their aggregates. Here people walk around fully clothed. Christer and I are sitting barefoot with shorts.
09.22 Now finally everything is as it should be. We got our breakfast and a dog has settled comfortably by our table. It is unclear whether it belongs to a guest or lives here at Camp Carnelley's.
09.53 We and also the power is now back in the room/house number 5. Before the homecoming we have been up to the reception building and booked a boat trip on Lake Naivasha, later today. The boat will depart at 14.00.
10.37 Once again we have walked down to the lake and the quiet, green area along the beach. We found a table with benches. It is time for reading and a quiet relaxing morning among all the birds.
Dog company by the breakfast table.
Christer is paying for our breakfast.
Christer is reading a book by Mons Kallentoft.
A peaceful place with bird sounds and the wind in the treetops.
11.12 We have just observed a weasel-like animal that ran on a tin roof, a short distance away. Two small black dogs appeared before any photos could be taken. They scared away the animal before they themselves departed. After a while, one of the dogs came back. The unknown beast was too fast for the tame dogs. We discussed which animal it could have been. We came to think of a mongoose but don't know if it had the right size, or if they are to be found here.
12.05 The relaxing and the reading has been aborted. It is not a sweltering heat today. It is quite cloudy and the cold winds from the lake makes it feel a little chilly.
12.43 Not much is being done today. We mostly move between the different seats. Now we have just sat down in the restaurant to eat lunch. We have chosen to eat a delicious burger with accessories.
13.45 After a brief stop at home in our house for the necessary preparations, we shall now go down to the dock/jetty place. The time has come for a new African boat trip, actually the third on this journey. We went by boat on both Lake Bunyonyi and the Kazinga channel in Uganda earlier during this trip.
13.59 So it is time to study animal life in and around the lake. Our boat dropped some of the previous passengers and have now brought us out on the open water. The man who guides us is quiet but knowledgeable. He shows us the different birds and tells us their names. Some we had not seen without his help.
14.18 There is plenty of water in the lake, a bit unusual with this much water during the dry season. The wildlife here at the Naivasha lake is not as fascinating as on our last boat journey. The lake is above all a paradise for birds and, of course, our old friends, the hippos, are here as well.
14.47 Birds, birds and yet more birds have been seen. It is impossible to remember all the species but we have seen pelicans. Also a few shy hippos have been sighted and, in fact, a herd of giraffes. These amazing animals are on an island called Crescent Island.
Waiting for the boat to arrive.
Christer is ready for a boat trip.
A cormorant bird.
Hippos in Lake Naivasha.
A pelican is sitting down thinking.
15.04 The boat trip is over. It was about an hour long and well worth the money. We got to see lots of birds and could once again observe and learn about hippos. In addition, we got to see the giraffes.
15.15 We are again at home in our home. On the way here we got to see a white dressed figure wandering around. We saw him in the restaurant earlier. He feels somewhat odd here. We call him "the prophet" and he would fit better in a play about the life of Jesus or in a bedouin tent in the Middle East. It is now time to do away with it last detergent that we brought with us. Washing of clothes is coming up.
16.29 Now when I have filled up with Uganda purchased detergent we will head out and read a bit again, if we have the energy of course.
16.41 A short distance away there is a car with diplomat plates. The wind wines around and above us the clouds are gathering. It is as mentioned time for more reading down by the lake.
17.45 It is not possible to just read. It is time to return indoors.
18.51 Christer feels worn out, exhausted and completely without energy. I hope it's just temporary. The ones in the neighbouring house are for sure noisy.
Lake Naivasha, one of many large lakes in Kenya.
Giraffes on Crescent Island.
Lots of water in the lake.
We are returning. The boat trip is soon over.
The mystical "prophet" at Camp Carnelley´s.
20.03 Christer is feeling a little better now but is not going to take a chance to eat dinner. Possibly he has eaten something inappropriate. I will soon eat something though and check if I can buy some bananas for the sick friend.
21.23 I had Cheesy Nachos for dinner and brought a bag with three bananas to Christer. The friendly restaurant staff did not charge me for the bananas.
22.09 Unfortunately, it seems that Christer have been affected by a nasty microorganism. The fatigue and lack of appetite followed by fever. Perhaps it is a curse that befell him after he took sneak photos of and joked about "the prophet" earlier today. Our plans for a long day's outing on the bike to Hell's Gate National Park tomorrow, now seems not very realistic.
08.11 Today it will be a quiet day. The bike excursion which we have planned, is cancelled. Christer is affected by fever, muscle aches and vomiting and he needs rest to gather strength and energy today. At this date last year he rested in Andahuaylas, Peru. He suffered from similar symptoms as now. It is probably some sort of virus but to have fever in Africa is never fun, given that it is easy to think that you´ve got malaria.
09.06 It has become time for me to wander off for a bit of chai ya asubuhi. It is Swahili for breakfast. It will probably be kahawa, coffee, and pancake.
09.54 It has been mentioned, been said in the past and now I do it again, breakfast is a good start to the day. In addition to coffee and pancakes, it was two fried eggs, a couple slices of bacon, a sausage, half a tomato and white beans in the sauce. Now I'm sitting in the chair outside our home. Soon I will resume the book reading.
11.12 It is not possible to just read. Something else must be done. Christer may continue its self healing process. I will head out for a walk.
11.37 I have left Camp Carnelley's. Once outside on the main road, I turned right. The day before yesterday we went to the left. It is always fun to see and report about something new. I have met people who walk, bike or drive a car. I have spoken to Joseph, who wanted to show paintings, carvings, and other. Now the rest on the barrier over. I'll wander on.
11.57 I passed the road to the Hippo Point, and at P. C. E. A Nyandarua Outreach Olkaria Church, I decided to turn back home. There is a beautiful view of Lake Naivasha.
The entrance to Camp Carnelley´s.
Flowers like roses are growing in these greenhouses.
The walk lasted until this church.
The road around Lake Naivasha.
12.32 After returning to our room and a little talk with Christer, I shall now go and buy some mango juice for him.
12.55 It went fine to purchase the juice. All of the liquid Christer can get is of benefit. A stomach in poor condition, would rather not get anything solid at all but the body needs fluid.
13.22 We have to get environment and air change. We walked down to one of the benches by the lake to have a relaxing time.
14.06 We have made a temporary stop in the reading. Now I'll see if I can arrange with a transport to Nairobi tomorrow. After that I'll go and buy some more.
14.10 It went fine to book a car. For 7000 shillings we will be driven to our hotel in Nairobi tomorrow, Saturday. Now I'll go and buy some stuff in the nearby village.
14.21 Now I have been to in the village of Sulmac, right next to the camp. The purchase was made in the little shop, Destiny Gens & Cereals. I bought two half litre bottles with mango juice and a litre of water for 110 shillings. Now I will go home again.
14.31 What is this? I have only brought with me the water and one juice bottle. Have I lost one on the way home? Oh well, just go back and look.
14.42 I did not see any sign or trace of the bottle. I had to go back to the shop. They wanted to have the 60 shilling for the juice, I only have 50 shillings in my pocket. The wallet is left in the room. One thing is for sure in all cases. I probably just bought one juice bottle. I never looked in the bag last time I was here. Now I will have to head home for the money. I'll be a regular customer here.
15.03 I went home again, got me money and went for the third time today to the store. It went fine to buy the juice. I had no problem bringing the juice home to Christer. Now I'm going to relax.
Peter is preparing a relaxing time with his book.
Peter became a regular customer here.
Yet another footography.
Our simple home.
16.25 I have paused in crossword puzzle solving and book reading. The coffee thirst has become too big.
16.58 Coffee, be it instant coffee, was just what I needed. Christer need to rest more.
18.40 It has become time to read about the next stop on their journey, the capital city of Nairobi. It is a city that I visited ten years ago.
19.46 Now the two of us have returned to Lazybones. It has become time for food. Christer is still a little feverish but his stomach feels better. He'll try to get in some solid food. We know from experience that it tends to be the turning point towards recovery. We have suffered these conditions a number of times on our travels. There is fever, muscle aches, stomach problems, but recovery takes place quite quickly. It has probably no connection with the food we eat, it is simply a virus.
20.54 Our dinner was marred by a group speaking out English loud, It was a game where you supposed to do some counting. You would apparently withhold certain numbers, but I saw no logic in the game. they were, in any case, heard over the entire restaurant.
22.01 Christer have eaten some real food again but could not manage to finish all of it. Now we need a night of rest before we take the next step on this summer trip.
