Thursday 14th of July

08.30 I just realised, as I read yet another chapter in the book that takes place in Sweden, I'm not in Sweden at all! I am in Uganda and in the capital, Kampala. Incidentally, it is the 81st capital city that we slept in during our travels. It is now time to leave room G18 at Hotel Acacia City (http://www.acaciacitykampala.com) and head to the fourteenth room where Christer resides. Today we are going to meet an internet acquaintance of Christer. We will meet her at 13.00 so, hopefully, a lot will happen before then.

08.40 The lock in my door is a little tricky. It is a classic key hole so I have to get the key in just the right position if I want to lock the door.

08.47 As we are reunited and the last necessary things have been taken care of here in Christer's place, we will now take the stairs down to sit at the table where breakfast will be served.

09.03 You can choose between indoor and outdoor seats when you eat in the restaurant here. There is also good internet connection in the restaurant as well as in the whole of the ground floor, it is worse in the rooms. On a few occasions the contact with the network works, but it is hardly useful.

09.54 Breakfast, a good such one and time planning, a successful one, is over. Now it's time to put plans into action. We want to see more of Kampala, we can't sit still here at the hotel. Next we'll examine the nearby mall, Acacia Mall to see what is offered there.

A new day starts in Kampala.

Breakfast at Hotel Acacia City.

10.51 There was a little more preparation before we got out. As we waited to cross the street outside the hotel a worn man in an even more worn leather jacket came up to us. He wanted to know where we were from and offered something. I do, however, not know what he had to offer. Now, we are inside the Acacia Mall (http://www.theacaciamall.com). Here we got the small backpacks checked and had to pass through a metal detector before entry was allowed. Outside, there are also a few jeeps full of police and automatic weapons. Here it is nothing sloppy with the security thinking.

11.08 We have been sitting on a bench and looked out over the surrounding area at Acacia Mall. Here are to mention some a small restaurant with German cuisine, another one serving kebabs. We have photographed and Christer has filmed.

11.30 To make time pass and to get something in our stomachs, we sat down at Bbrood Koffee. It is a small café here in the Acacia Mall. The business is based in large parts on take-away. Here are only a few tables and chairs.

11.53 It is never wrong with a cup of coffee and a good pastry. Now we will soon leave the Acacia Mall for now. We will come back in the future. We stay in the vicinity.

12.17 We have come home to the hotel again and will now prepare for this afternoon's mission. Christer's room is occupied by the cleaning staff. We are spending some time in the restaurant instead.

12.33 Just as we were waiting we suddenly heard "Hello Christer". Had the staff memorized his name? No, it was Christer's local friend, Proscovia, who has her lunch break. Now we must take care of some things before we head on. Christer will change the shoes because of a long walk through the city which is planned later today.

12.48 Everything was done and now the three of us have sat down at Café Javas, a short distance away. We will get something to drink. Proscovia works today and with the help of a boda boda (motor cycle taxi) she went here for a short meeting with us during her lunch break.

Acacia Mall, Kampala

We are looking out from Acacia Mall.

Coffee and internet at Bbrood.

Proscovia had the opportunity to meet us.

It´s nice to communicate without internet this time.

13.05 It is always nice to make new acquaintances, chat a little with someone else and just take it easy. The internet has made it easy to get to know people in all corners of the world but to meet in person is still much nicer.

13.35 So it is just the two of us again. Proscovia has jumped on a motorcycle and returned to her job. We, however, have returned to the hotel and are in Christer's room. It is time to make plans and to take out the compass direction to the next adventure here in Kampala. We are planning for a slightly late lunch for us.

13.50 We are once again in motion. We are far from alone. Shall we get to where we are meant to be, I can't stand here on the sidewalk and write.

14.09 A quiet walk along Acacia Avenue has taken us to Yasigi Beer Garden. It is a microbrewery and we will both drink some of their products and also eat lunch here. Here it is quiet, we seem to more or less be the only guests. We have sat down at an outdoor table.

14.38 The food is served. There is grilled meat, fresh salad and tasty sauce for me, skewers, strips and sauce for Christer. In the glasses we have the Yasigi brewery's own IPA beer. A car drove in here during the meal. The driver had a T-shirt from Ronald Reagan's president election campaign in 1984, a garment that been around for a while.

15.17 It was very good food and IPA. With these in the stomachs we are now on the move further towards the city centre. So far, Kampala has demonstrated a lot of nice things.

15.28 Just as we stroll the sidewalk a golf course suddenly appears to the left. Golf is being played in the middle of the city. Now we are facing a challenge. It is some road work on the Yusuf Lule Road, so it takes some planning to be able to stroll past here.

Christer is walking along Acacia Avenue.

Yasigi Beer Garden, Kampala.

We have ordered two IPA beers.

Christers delicious meal at Yasigi Beer Garden.

Uganda Golf Course.

15.43 After some trouble, we managed to make it past the road work and the traffic chaos it created. It becomes all the more central around us where we go. We are just now on Nile Avenue and crosses Hannington Road.

16.01 We continued towards the city centre. Suddenly we were stopped by a young man who wondered if we were Icelanic, hmm.. a new nationality which we have been mistaken for! He was called Godfrey, and probably still is. He was, dad, a construction worker, from the north of Uganda and HIV-positive. He claimed that was the reason, the HIV thus, why he had been fired by his Indian employer. Now he needed money to take the bus home. We assisted with a small contribution. Our walk finally took us to our goal, the Easy Coach bus station. Here we have just bought our bus tickets. We will travel to Kenya on Saturday.

16.21 Our studies of the capital is coming to an end. We are on the road to our fixed point, our home in the city. In order to get some variety, we take a different route back. We have among others passed the huge hotel complex Kampala Serena Hotel, so large that it has its own road inside the hotel grounds.

17.00 On the way home along Acacia Avenue, we met really dark skinned people. They looked like labourers. Have they become darkened by the sun, or they have a different origin than other we met here? Who knows? Here at home in Hotel Acacia City, we have re-entered the restaurant area. We are going to order juice. It is not wise to cut corners with the intake of liquid. Now it's going to be filled.

17.34 We have returned to our respective rooms. Now we shall refresh and mostly take it easy for a while forward.

Golf Course Hotel, Kampala.

Walking towards central Kampala.

We know for sure that we have arrived. This company really show where they are.

It´s time to buy tickets at Easy Coach.

18.37 It is quiet and still. No requirement to accomplish something. A right pleasant time.

19.17 Sometimes time moves very fast. It is once again time for the two of us to make things happen.

20.04 Rainfall is what the juice mixture as Christer has ordered for his dinner is called. We have walked to Endiro Coffee (http://www.endirocoffee.com), a place just behind the Acacia Mall. As in so many other places here you can sit both indoors and outdoors.

21.20 The juice had a totally different flavour than what Christer had expected. Had something gone amiss with the order. During the meal we heard Swedish spoken. It was of course the spoken language by us but also from a phone calling young lady at another table. On the way home was I bought detergent and juice in a store next to Endiro Coffee. Here at home we are now sipping on a ice cold beer while we upate ourselves on the internet. In addition, I have an appointment with my internet friend in the city, Peter Obbo. He says that he will pass by here tomorrow at 11 o'clock.

22.27 The morning is planned. Now I lie stretched out in the bed. Today's walking is noticed in the legs. It is time to wind down before I off and go to sleep.

This evening´s dinner plates at Endiro Coffee.

Friday 15th of July

07.47 A day that will be our last full day in Uganda is here. There are things planned for this day. It is always good to have plans. Without such you mostly sit still.

08.37 I have once again walked to Christer's room. He seems satisfied with the night. Now we shall start this final day in the country.

09.24 At the breakfast table, thanks to the access to the internet, we got the news about the madness atrocity in Nice, France yesterday. A man in a truck killed at least 84 people. He drove randomly across the people along the Promenade des Anglais. They were there to celebrate the French national day.

09.36 Through some of the comment fields and social media, it can be noted that some of the rightwing people home in Sweden can barely withhold their joy over the atrocity in Nice. Now they get new energy and new ammunition to the hatred against muslims they spread. Perhaps it would be better to show empathy for the victims than to incite against an entire religion, you might think. A conspiracy theory is that Swedish media are telling lies about what had happened since they wrote that the victims were killed by a truck, not a muslim. Sigh!

10.06 Now it starts to be time for this morning's first mission. We are in need of more Ugandan shillings. Now the question is, how much should we withdraw? How much more shillings will we spend before we leave the country?

10.17 We have taken a decision that the money withdrawal will have to wait a while. There is no immediate panic with the money, and the longer we wait, the greater is the probability that we take an appropriate sum.

Morning view from Christer´s room.

Endiro Coffee, yesterday´s dinner place is today´s meeting point.

Christer and Peter Obbo.

Peter is having lunch in Acacia Mall.

From Acacia Mall you can see Acacia Avenue and Kira Road.

Some people eat outdoors.

10.54 My local internet friend, Peter Obbo appeared at the hotel just like we had decided. We sat down and talked a while before we took a walk to Endiro Coffee, where we also had our dinner last night. Here it will be coffee for Christer and myself and Peter will have a late breakfast.

11.27 Christer is drinking "normal" coffee, I drink "African coffee" and Peter have, as mentioned, breakfast and drinks the juice mixture Rainfall, the same kind of juice that Christer had yesterday. Or is it? It neither looks like or tastes like the one Christer had. The fact is that it has a taste that matches the ingredients that should be included. What was then the juice Christer drank yesterday? I guess that we never will know. The only thing we know was that it contained lots of ginger.

12.10 It was a nice chat with Peter. He has shown us various documents around a project he is engaged in. The project needs sponsors. Peter, who works as a pastor and is helping people in need has also invited us to his family this evening. He will come and pick us here at the hotel at 17.00. Before that, Christer and I have some things to do. Here you can read more about Peter´s work/project.

Uganda Integrated Community Based Projects

12.39 Right now we are taking a classic bench break on the same bench as yesterday. We are thus back in the mall, Acacia Mall. Soon it shall be lunch.

12.55 Pineapple, said the waiter and put down my juice. We are now at Karam Halal Food, which is one of the restaurant options here in the mall food court. We were very kindly received here. The service is excellent.

13.57 It was a spicy but delicious lunch. After a short bench break after the food, we shall now arrange with the last local currency. My phone has suddenly and completely on its own decided to turn itself off.

We are on our way to Uganda Museum.

It´s time to visit a museum in yet another country.

Peter is taking a photo of Christer at Uganda Museum.

14.11 The ATM didn't give me any money and it also wanted to retain my VISA card. It relent in the end and handed back of the card. The next ATM was kinder and I got my money. Now we are ready to continue the day. The next item on the program is about history.

14.35 You should always get a small dose of culture, and facts on a journey. We have now walked to the nearby Uganda Museum and look at artefacts from different eras. It is unfortunately forbidden to take photos and a large group of children/young people stand in the way of us, blocking the way to some parts of the museum. The group will also be filmed by a man who seem to carry a TV camera.

15.32 It was not the most impressive museum I've seen but we have had some cultural and historical injections. Most of it felt old, and then we don't refer to the exhibits. We were wondering if the signs were made during the British colonial period or later. The museum was founded in any case, already in 1908. Now we'll make ourselves ready for the evening's visit to Mr Obbo with family. What will happen there and then?

16.36 We have united in Christer's room. Now we'll make ourselves ready for the trip to the Obbo family.

17.10 We have just been picked up by Peter.

17.33 We have occasionally made a stop in the journey. We have travelled to the east towards the nearby town of Port Bell, swung by and arrived at Mbuya Parents School (http://www.mbuyaparentsschool.com), a private school where the children live during the week. Here are a number of students. Two of these students are Peter's children. Children/students walk quietly around in their blue school uniforms. There are also signs with various educational messages.

Peter Obbo with his children Daniel and Grace.

This is the house where the family Obbo lives.

Two Peters and happy children.

Pink chickens, why not?

17.48 After having met and talked with the shy children Grace and Daniel, we shall now continue our journey to Peter's home.

17.57 We are now at the home of Peter and his family. The streets here were, to say the least, bumpy. It was impressive that the car could run all the way. Outside the house, a car is being repaired and pink chickens wanders around among hens and a rooster. The house is located directly behind a large hotel, Afrique Suites.

18.20 We have met Peter's wife, his sister, brother and children, and even a few friends of the children. Outside the house we have once again met the pink chickens. I have never seen pink chickens before. We have played and talked with the kids for a while and have taken some photos.

18.55 Peter has taken us on a small car trip. Christer asked how far we were from Lake Victoria and then we got an offer to go and see it. Now we are down at Africa's largest lake. Last year we were at South America's largest lake. What will it be in the lake area next year? We see only a small part of the lake, a cove with several fishing boats, but it is in all cases of Lake Victoria. Three happy children have followed us in the car here.

19.09 Things messed up on our journey back home. There are vehicles that are not moving in front of us down by the lake. We are not going away from the open space down at the beach/harbour here in Port Bell.

19.27 All worked out and we are now back at the home of Peter. They are now going to invite us to dinner. The kids are really curious about us and the initial bashfulness begins to fade.

19.50 We have enjoyed a delicious home cooked dinner. We got meat, spaghetti, rice, vegetables, coffee and much more. The delicate African vegetables were grown right outside the house here. This is a nice memory that will linger. Before our departure, we gathered in a circle and Peter prayed that our journey would continue happily, and that our connection between Uganda and Sweden is able to lead to many good things in the future.

We had the opportunity to see Lake Victoria in Port Bell.

Peter and his car.

Acrobatics in the sofa.

We enjoyed a delicious homemade dinner.

The family Obbo.

20.15 The children are doing their utmost to entertain themselves and us. They have made various tricks like standing on the head in the couch. We have been told more about what Peter work with. He has as mentioned a project for those who don't have it so easy in the society. We are not wealthy enough to finance it but have promised to help spread his mission to the world through our travel journal.

21.10 Peter drove us to our hotel in Kampala and we said not goodbye but see you soon again. Now, we calm down with passion fruit juice in the restaurant part of the Hotel Acacia City.

21.39 The duo is split again. Next are some minor personal evening chores before sleep takes over.

Saturday 16th of July

08.27 Fresh air and the sounds from the street are entering through the window behind the bed. Now there will be no more mornings here in Uganda. Today, we head to a new country for Christer. For my part, I was there ten years ago. My phone continues to turn itself off. This is not good.

09.21 At breakfast we once again surprised a person working in the catering service by saying no to eggs. To voluntarily abstain from eggs for breakfast is a radically incomprehensible decision for many people we met in Africa. News flow reporting on a coup attempt in Turkey and also about the various events surrounding the game Pokémon Go. This game has made people to stray away. Does it take a game in the cell phone to make people go outdoors?

10.15 Now soon our stay here at the Hotel Acacia City is over. All that remains is to check it out and check if we can leave the backpacks here for a while during our lunch.

10.25 It went just fine to leave our stuff at the hotel. Now we will make a final visit in the nearby area.

11.02 Well here we are again. Here is the bench in the mall, Acacia Mall. We have checked out from the hotel, paid and left the baggage. Now, the remaining hours are planned. At home in Sweden people are advised by the foreign ministry not to travel to Turkey on the basis of an attempted coup. However, it is totally OK to go to France where people were brutally murdered by a terrorist. We think this is strange.

A simple lunch at KFC this day.

11.47 There are for sure contrasts with our meals. Yesterday night there was a local home-cooked dinner with Peters family. Today it is lunch of fast food at KFC in the Acacia Mall. It is neither the first nor the last time we go to that chain. Sometimes you need quick and hearty food.

12.48 After lunch we were in and bought something to eat on the bus but also at the other end tonight. Everything was bought at the supermarket Nakumatt. Then we exchanged shilling, we have switched from Ugandan to Kenyan shillings.

12.59 It has become time to go to the bus. We are back at our hotel, have retrieved our backpacks and ordered a taxi.

13.11 It went quickly and smoothly. Now we are sitting on a bus seat in the waiting room of the bus company the Easy Coach (http://www.easycoach.co.ke). The tickets where bought here last Thursday. Last year we also sat in bus seats in a waiting room. Then we were in Tarma, Peru.

13.40 A headless mannequin was just carried onto the bus. Will it need a ticket? We have stepped on board a warm bus and are waiting for departure.

14.00 Our long, international journey has just begun.

14.31 We have once again seen a national stadium, Mandela National Stadium. The road is, bumpy to say the least. Our driver, chose smaller, local roads instead of the main road to the east, maybe it goes faster, perhaps avoiding a road construction or traffic jams, who knows?

We are traveling with Easy Coach.

We had to wait for a while in this boring room.

We are on the bus heading for Kenya.

15.20 In the end, we left the red, dry and bumpy mud road. The road dust had spread a red cover over houses, cars and vegetation. Now it bobs and sways, we are on a paved road. We have reached Mukono.

15.54 The bus has stopped and directly vendors of the eat - and drinkable things boarded the bus to increase their daily income. It seems to be a stopping point in the middle of the forest reserve, Mabira Forest Reserve.

16.23 Just now we went over the Nile. We are in the city of Jinja. It was not allowed to take photos when we went over the bridge, which was announced on the bus along the introduction. Last time we saw the Nile was in August 2005. It was in connection with our excursion to the pyramids of Giza, Egypt, who we last saw this mighty river.

17.12 We have passed something unusual for our trips in Africa and for this time of year, a rain. Recently we were in Iganga. There were some confused European tourists around.

18.06 The time has come to prepare ourselves. Soon, we will cross the border with Kenya. I hope we get there before it gets completely dark.

18.40 Both when we left Uganda and when we entered Kenya, we were asked to show our passports and vaccination cards regarding yellow fever. In addition, they wanted to have our photos and our fingerprints. It went everything but smooth to scan your fingers. First, the right-hand fingers, then right thumb and so the same thing with the five of the left hand.

19.09 The lady who previously sat in front of me is not allowed to enter in Kenya. Her baggage has just been taken out.

KENYA

19.44 We make a first stop inside in Kenya. Out there there's lightning between the clouds.

20.10 It is time for a new stop. Why do we stop this time? Is there any control?

21.05 Finally, we have left the bus. We have come to Kisumu in western Kenya. Now we just have to get from the Easy Coach own bus terminal.

21.30 An easily confused taxi driver drove us to the Riversands Hotel. It was the first time we were told the hotel's name. On the internet and on our booking confirmation, it was only "R´Sands Hotel". Here, it went fine to check in. Up in room 320, we were asked if we wanted a towel each. There was only one towel in the room. We have been through this in the past and will be through it again. Why you put just one towel in a double room? We got the towel and also asked for a new, functioning light bulb in the bathroom. We are again south of the equator.

21.50 Charles came here and switched to a fresh and healthy light bulb, He was happy, pleasant and helpful, Charles, that is, not the bulb.

22.07 Tonight's simple dinner consists of eating what we have in our paper bags from the supermarket in Kampala. It is purchased bread and drinks.

22.30 Now that we have a lamp that can be lit, we have made sure that it and its friends are off and the mosquito nets are down. We want to sleep.

There is a hole in the bathroom door.

Our room at Riversands Hotel.
